With the outrageous and unending whiplash that is the 2025 news cycle, I think there should be a universally recognized "no guilt trip" amnesty for cancelling plans you made more than a week ago. Like, I have lived several lives since then and I know not the person I once was. Release me.

Shortly before dying from cancer in 2002, anthropologist Grover Krantz arranged to have his body donated to the Smithsonian under one condition: his remains and that of his dog would be displayed to replicate his favourite photo. More info: shorturl.at/hEqbT

Since it's been raining really hard in my corner of the world, please be safe when going outside even though it's bright and sunny in yours!

Victorian medicine chest, which contains medications for pain relief, such as opium. It also includes a set of scales, weights, a pill tile, and a spatula. It was probably used in the home or by an apothecary.

It's been a year since our trip to Ireland. What a wonderful land and people. If you visit, make sure you visit Trinity College in Dublin and see the Book of Kells exhibit.

Most of the ancient books are being removed for preservation, but your book nerd fetish can certainly be adequately fed here.

During #WW1, artists like Anna Coleman Ladd created masks for disfigured soldiers. The metal was painted with hard enamel to resemble the recipient's skin tone. Ladd used real hair to create the eyelashes, eyebrows and moustaches. Had it not been for her efforts, many would have lived in isolation.

This jeweled skeleton comes from the Waldsassen Basilika in Germany, the “Sistine Chapel of Death.” Skilled nuns, or occasionally monks, dressed the skeletons in elaborate 18th-century clothing and then covered them with jewels.

Why is it that one minute I'm feeling down because I don't deserve to be happy because I'm me and then I laugh when my friends react WTF?! to the memes I send them?

It's a fantastic book - download it - buy it - or just borrow it and read it. The Dust Bowl Triolgy are worth the effort.

I think one of the reasons some people (myself often included) find the posts about how "Mother's Day is for pet owners/aunts/people who don't want kids too!" annoying is not a devaluing of others' experiences, but feeling as though a deeply life-changing and difficult role is in yet another way...

The Japanese artist Masayo Fukuda hand-cut this incredible life-sized octopus from one sheet of paper. Known as Kirie in Japanese (translated as “cut picture”), the traditional art form involves cutting intricate forms from a single sheet of white paper and contrasting it against a dark background.

When I'm researching an artist's work, or just if I'm curious, I am a total crazy completist. But if anyone ever came to me and said, "I am going to read every word you have ever published," I would smile politely and immediately start thinking about how to dispose of a human body.

Don’t shame people for not immediately reading all the books they buy. Some books aren’t made to be ready right away, okay? Some books need time to mature. Some books need to cure for a while. Some books are prosciutto, and don’t you forget it.

Me, in the morning when I want to see if it's light yet, but don't want to really wake up.

I interrupted this male Snowy Owl's nap during a gear testing visit to the Toronto Zoo.

This 17th-century watch is a "memento mori," a reminder of the shortness of life. The inscription roughly translates: "Thus passes wordly glory remember your end." It was sold by Christies in 2017 for £12.5K.
