I suspect MAGA functions similarly. The most radical Islamist terrorists often have the least coherent ideological priors, which is also true of rabid MAGAts.

Counterpoint: research has shown that participation in extremist organizations - terrorist groups, actually - stems less from ideological commitment and more from social dynamics. People join because they seek approval from family, want to make friends, and want to find community, in Al fking Qaeda

The problem is that elected Dems would have to start wanting to hold law enforcement accountable, and that’s a moonshot on the best day.

It’s always kind of crazy to me that Democrats seem to be so unwilling to pursue serious police reform when FOPs and other police unions form the backbone of the GOP’s electoral apparatus and police are the most loyal group of Republican voters bar none.

True, but the collapse of Stalin’s cult of personality didn’t mean Kruschev couldn’t use the state apparatus Stalin built to govern even as a lesser personality. JD is arguably worse than Kruschev even if Trump isnt quite Stalin at the moment.

I think there would be no more guaranteed failure of a president than JD but he’s got so much behind him vis Thiel et al he can’t be written off as a disaster in waiting. That said as long as 2028 is rigged I don’t think we see more than two years of it. But that’s a huge if.

A couple of months ago I was talking to my therapist and she said “damn you really hate JD Vance” which kind of sums up where I’m at. I have a whole spiel about how he’s lied about his life to get sympathy that someone from that background can never actually find, but character limits suck.

I think they’re going to pull the plug on the Trump presidency after the midterms and transition into the JD 10 year plan, but admittedly that’ll sound like a conspiracy theory until it happens and I’m proven correct.

But that does go back to the point of contention regarding the status of US investment in Venezuela as exploitative. It generally really wasn’t, especially during the 2007 expropriations. The generation of that contention was a policy choice but Chavez, a bad one to boot.

And yes, the U.S. does exploit and are violent abroad. But it’s not the exact same everywhere. We do stuff in some places we don’t in others for lots of esoteric reasons. Venezuela has been, compared to most of Latin America, relative free of American fuckery.

And if you had made that argument in regards to like Guatemala I’d largely agree but I don’t see the same thing occurring in Venezuela, which has typically not been subject to the same sorts of interventions as the Central American fruit producing nations. Though some of that is the to V’s stability
