These things never end well for coaches who've spent a career at one school, unless your name is Nick Saban or Tom Osborne. Because every other coach who has tried to go beyond the horizon line at a job they made great, has eventually faded away from losing or shame. Or both.

This is part of what's wrong with college football. Either every fan base "deserves" national title aspirations, or none do. Whether it's for all of them is another thing. But no program deserves a title more than another, and in no other sport would you say such a thing www.espn.com/college-foot...
None of this is to say Kelly or Woodward needed to stay in their jobs. It's just that some tact was in order, if only for external perception. Nor was Landry all wrong about a few things -- coaching contracts are out of control, too many ADs and coaches share agents, and most notably, LSU and its fans deserve a program that can win national titles.

When the player, a former starter, decided he was going to transfer from LSU, he was informed by his position coaches that he would have a one-on-one meeting with Kelly to discuss why he wanted to leave. But Kelly never showed up to the meeting, according to the former player. Asked if he was surprised that Kelly's tenure in Baton Rouge was cut short, the former player said no.
