The graph shows an exponential increasing trend from 1000 BCE to ~300 CE, then a precipitous drop until 1300 CE when it resumes its increase. An extrapolated trend line is dashed in, and the gap between it and the graphed data is labelled "The hole left by the Christian Dark Ages". Notably, there is no scale for the Y-axis, and certainly no objective way of measuring "Scientific Advancement" exists. It is hard to overstate how terrible the original graph is, and how much it is improved by imagining the Roman Empire developing advancements in Internet Cat Photos.
