Set myself a reading goal of 100 books this year; realized in February this would mean about 2 books a week; figured I wouldn't hit it and that was fine because goals are made up.

Anyway.
A StoryGraph "books and pages read over time" chart. The previous high point is 2016, with 99 books. There's a big drop during 2020-2023; 2024 is 50 books. 2025 is 100. It is late October and my goal was 100 by the end of the year.

Undecided if "the Stone of Erech was originally written as a palantir" means it was a big-screen palantir or if it was normal size and thus a much more reasonable thing to chuck in your bug-out boat

Center lower back is "and then there's this asshole." Center upper neck back is "traitor." The bit that runs from behind your ear down the side of your neck is "jackass." I don't know what any of these muscles actually are but I think about this post every time I fuck up this malfunctioning human meatsuit by doing something like "sleeping funny" or "existing non-ergonomically." Ow.

patch notes: reduced stench, updated inventory

Here he first described the reek from the tunnel in these words: 'Out of it came a stench: not the sickly odour of decay from the meads of Morghul, but a choking rankness, noisome, a reek as of piled and hoarded filth beyond reckoning, tainting even the open air with evil.' But he queried in the margin whether this description was not too strong: if the stench had been so unendurably horrible even from outside 'would they ever have gone in?'; and replaced it immediately with the description in TT (p. 326). He hesitated too about the width of the tunnel. My father was apparently concerned here with the problem arising from having only two hands.

(A new character has come on the scene Faramir, the brother of Boromir) – and he is holding up the ‘catastrophe' by a lot of stuff about the history of Gondor and Rohan (with some very sound reflections no doubt on martial glory and true glory): but if he goes on much more a lot of him will have to be removed to the appendices where already some fascinating material on the hobbit Tobacco industry and the Languages of the West have gone.

Today on stuff we found in a library book: an ILL request form from 1984! The office minions are now learning about carbon paper
A typewritten form on continuous feed paper (the stuff with the tearaway holes) accompanied by a sheet of matching carbon paper (black treated paper used for making typed duplicates). I assume the form was originally sent via Teletype but I am not that old to begin with and I was definitely not employed during that era. The book requested on the form is partially visible underneath.
