In the meantime I dug out the two old controllers I have. One won't work unless you keep it plugged in... but now the power connection is loose so it won't stay connected to the power. The other one is fully charged but won't stay on.

Source: I changed my name via unenrolled deed poll after I got marriedl An enrolled deed poll might make things slightly easier, but 99% of places I needed to change my name with were happy with my deed poll. (my bank got shitty but a phone call and direction to the gov site later they got over it)
