As I walked through oilslick streets my uneasy breath made huge, opaque clouds and gathered on the inside of my tin mask as freezing condensation. I turned up the collar of my greatcoat to the inclement weather and sunk into the shadows of it. Water dripped from the wide brim of my hat. In the dark and thus disguised, I looked like any other man. People pushed past me without a second glance. Still, I kept my gaze low.

A sharp knife makes all the difference between a quick, clean cut and a massacre of choppy, gut-covered bits. Smaller fish, like pollock or mackerel, can be opened with one quick swipe of the blade down the backbone. Cod requires patience. “You’ve gotten better at that cut since you did it to me,” says the man I murdered last year. He floats a few inches off the ground, idling near the stairs.
