Men do not seek to burn their women for witching. The devils and werewolves have been driven from the land. Still in the hamlets and villages that scatter the barren land, they bury their dead with sickle and stone. A revenant comes in the night to an accursed family, bearing sickness. They disinter the cadavers of their beloved and part the heads from the bodies.

My battered flesh reconstructs itself as every ingested drop reaches the farthest crevices of my being. Bones break apart and mend themselves stronger than they were before. The pain is so swift, it bears no resemblance to the agony I had to endure under my maker’s torturous cruelty. Then I feel every sinew filling with life, making itself known to me, greeting me like an old acquaintance I never had. My skin smooths back to its familiar hue of faded leaves, and my eyes blaze in shades of the very blood that sustains me. Breath fills my lungs, and a ragged gasp is torn from my throat as it restores itself. My chest heaves with relief as the pain fades into nothing but the familiar echo of what I have endured.

From the main room, hands appeared to take my coat, my hat. I let them, soothed by the cushioning darkness, given a velvet quality by the haze of smoke. From within this shroud came points of soft light; the low, controlled glow of an opium lamp. They scattered the murky room like dying stars. Amongst them, amongst the pillows and furs, lay piles of unmoving contorted flesh. Bodies on bodies. Limp, cast across one another careless. A mass grave. Their breath was soft, almost invisible, their half-closed eyes sucked into a drowning pool of dreaming. Atop a bunk lay a woman in repose, as if painted, her face turned from me, her hand hanging limp over the edge. This was a house of the dead. Its denizens never-living. All those years I had lived beneath the soil, in those cut, festering wells of misery and fear. It was here alone I could feel the soft embrace of the grave.
