To conclude each day of fascinating talks and workshops, BEP led two Star Parties with constellation tours, with clear skies both nights.

It was so valuable to hear about the cultural significance of dark sky preservation from local Indigenous knowledge holders, and the importance of protecting dark skies for Four Corners ecosystems, culture, and local economies.

Field trips will resume in March 2026 once Cedar Mesa wakes back up from winter.

These sessions provide hands-on activities like creating cordage bracelets from local resources, analyzing what regionally-collected fossils suggest this landscape has formerly looked like, and practicing @visitwithrespect.bsky.social principles.

The final trips of our school field trip season brought out students from Bluff Elementary and Tsébii'nidzisgai Elementary to visit Devils Canyon Campground. Students got to explore the piñon juniper forest and learn about the ways plants in the Bears Ears region have adapted for the environment.

And earlier this year, Carleton was in Washington, DC to meet with partners and policy makers about the need for Indigenous conservation corps like Canyon Country Youth Corps in stewarding the cultural and ecological resources of the Bears Ears region.
