November is Native American Heritage Month. Bears Ears Partnership recognizes our work is carried out on traditional lands taken from the Diné, Hopi, Ute, Zuni, and other Tribes and Pueblos. We aspire to honor and learn from the long history of stewardship and connection to this sacred landscape.

It was so valuable to hear about the cultural significance of dark sky preservation from local Indigenous knowledge holders, and the importance of protecting dark skies for Four Corners ecosystems, culture, and local economies.

These sessions provide hands-on activities like creating cordage bracelets from local resources, analyzing what regionally-collected fossils suggest this landscape has formerly looked like, and practicing @visitwithrespect.bsky.social principles.

The final trips of our school field trip season brought out students from Bluff Elementary and Tsébii'nidzisgai Elementary to visit Devils Canyon Campground. Students got to explore the piñon juniper forest and learn about the ways plants in the Bears Ears region have adapted for the environment.

Earlier this fall, our Policy Director Carleton Bowekaty was busy in NYC for Climate Week. Carleton spoke on a panel, Public Lands Protection is Climate Action, organized by @patagonia.com and @conservationlands.bsky.social at the downtown Patagonia office.

We are so grateful these volunteers lent their time and attention to help protect Bears Ears!

Our education team will continue to do outreach across the region with classroom visits as well as trips out on the landscape to engage students.

Over lunch, we got to share a thoughtful conversation about the Bears Ears National Monument management plan, the varied perspectives represented by land users and their needs, personal connections to the landscape, and students' hopes for future visits into Bears Ears.

A few weeks ago, we had the joy of welcoming Animas High School students and teachers to the Bears Ears landscape for a stewardship project with the Bureau of Land Management.

Bad day to be a Russian thistle! BEP staff and volunteers from Utah Site Stewards, Osprey Packs, and Utah State Parks recently spent a day removing invasive species in a campground in Indian Creek as part of National Public Lands Day.
