Sandhill cranes minding their nest with three gigantic eggs. One of the coolest bird things I've ever seen. I've been photographing sandhill cranes for decades but never seen a nest. Hoping to photograph the chicks soon! #birds 🪶 #cranes #sandhillcranes #floridabirds #nikon #nikond850

Another look at the purple martins nesting. The folks who put the nest up a month ago thought it could take months or maybe even years for martins to find the nest. Looks like the found it within weeks! #birds #martins #purplemartins #floridabirds #SoUL 🪶

Purple Martins have moved into the new houses just installed at the local lake. I just happened to catch them tonight. Super cool! #birds #martins #purplemartins #floridabirds 🪶

My beautiful and talented daughter turns 28 today! She’s been through so much over the last year but showed amazing perseverance and grace. This year is going to be the best yet! #phaseone #p65+ #studio

Barn swallow that had a bad wing likely from flying into a car. Beautiful little bird that had a funny personality. All of the images I made of it looked like it wondered what I was doing. Another bird that I had very little time with to not stress it out. #birds 🪶#swallow #animalportrait #flashes

American kestrel that was rescued after flying into the windshield of a car. The little guy had issues with flying so he couldn’t be returned to the wild. I recently was lucky enough to document a pair of kestrels raise a chick that successfully fledged. I’ll post in the future. #birds 🪶 #kestrel

Fish crow named Fred who someone tried to raise as a pet but quickly realized they were in over their head because Fred was destroying their home. Crows are my favorite birds and Fred had quite the vocabulary as well as a penchant for demanding scritches #birds 🪶 #corvid #fishcrow #portrait #strobe

White Pelican with mating horn. You don’t realize how big these birds are until you see one up close. We don’t normally see horns this big in FL where they migrate for the summer. Most of the pelicans rescued are released but this one was a permanent resident #birds 🪶 #pelican #whitepelican

Yellow-crowned night heron giving me the stink eye. I love these birds and their bitchy attitudes. I’m minding my own business and suddenly I’m getting croaked at for having the audacity to walk within 20 yards of them. They’re the goth kids of the bird world #birds 🪶 #attitude #studio #portrait

Blue-footed booby photographed at the sanctuary. We set up in an outdoor enclosure and volunteers would bring us birds. Some worked, others weren’t having it. The booby was blind and would stand for a second and then wander off. #birds 🪶 #booby #portrait #studio #profoto

Cattle egret photographed in the location studio. I photographed all of the birds with a Canon 5d Mk II and Profoto lights. Probably the most satisfying project I’ve ever done and I was able to use the images to raise money for Tri-State Bird Rescue in DE 🪶 #birds #egret #portrait #studio

Cedar waxwing photographed on location at the sanctuary. The smallest bird I’d ever photographed and not easy to light. It was important to be respectful and not stress the animal out it. Most were “lifers,” unable to be released due to injury 🪶 #birds #portrait #CedarWaxwing #profoto

Ten years ago, I was photographing athletes and musicians and I wondered if I could photograph birds the same way. A local seabird sanctuary gave me the chance, letting me capture their birds up close to help raise awareness about habitat loss. This tiny screech owl was my first subject. #birds 🪶

There’s a pair of limpkins at my local lake that spend their days eating snails and quietly stalking around. They had a chick last year but it unfortunately didn’t make it. Photo made with a Nikon D850 and a 200-500. #birds 🪶 #limpkin #shorebirds #blackandwhite #nikon

I’ve become a little obsessed with trying to make photos of blue-gray gnat catchers. They are busy and hard to catch in flight and look like little cartoons. Thankfully, this one stopped for a second to make it a little easier on me. Nikon D850 and a 200-500 f5.6 #birds 🪶 #gnatcatcher #nikon

I normally walk right by anhingas when I see them but this one was preening and posing and so I had to shoot a few frames. Photographed with a Nikon D850 and 200-500 f5.6. #birds 🪶 #snakebird #anhinga #waterfowl #shorebird #nikon

Juvenile pied-billed grebe at my local lake here in St Pete. The parents returned this year and had a chick even earlier than last year. My birder buddy says it’s unusual for them breed so early and so far north in Florida. Photo made with a Nikon D850, 200-500 and a 1.4 tele #birds 🪶 #grebe #nikon

I recently photographed Apollo, an African Grey who holds a Guinness World Record for identifying the most objects in 3 minutes. Having met and photographed many smart birds, I can confidently say Apollo stands out. He’s a TikTok star with millions of fans—and was happy posing for a few pistachios!
