My first book, 'Tudor Wales' (2014), is a handy travel guide to all the locations in Wales associated with the Tudors and the Tudor period. Visiting Tudor Wales seems all the rage these days, so why not pick up a copy and get planning your summer trips?

France makes Henry Tudor king of England. Henry then refuses to accept France taking control of Brittany to whom he sends soldiers. The French call him ungrateful. Anglo-French relations decline and drift towards war. Then, Perkin Warbeck, a French-sponsored challenger to Henry's throne appears 🤔

A lot gets written about Perkin Warbeck, but few ever delve deeper than the surface, merely taking Warbeck's claim at face value, or his confession. More attention needs to be paid to the murky world of late 15th century international diplomacy

Something wonderful for the weekend!

About 40,000 years ago, during the #IceAge, an ancient artist skilfully sculpted this tiny head of a cave lion from mammoth ivory. It is one of the World’s oldest known works of figurative art.

A fascinating thread about a beautiful, intriguing painting!
I don't see many long threads on here, but I'll try one - it's about Holbein's Ambassadors, his 1533 masterpiece in the National Gallery. It's often presented as a great mystery, but I think once we understand the circumstances in which it was made, its meaning becomes clearer.

There are many competing (and entirely valid) theories about this painting! But for more of my thoughts and Holbein's important place in the history of British art, see my new book The Invention of British Art.

Beautiful #IceAge art.

About 15,000 years ago, this lovely and realistic depiction of two deer was engraved on a piece of reindeer bone. From the Chauffaud Cave, France.

Fascinating discussion playing out here around this latest Stonehenge hypothesis. Bluesky is now the place to be for interesting discussions between experts and great dialogue!
Thought this wouldn’t be far off. Mike Parker Pearson expounds on his theory of Stonehenge as a unitary monument for Britain and Ireland in light of new evidence for the Scottish origins of the Altar Stone (link to the paper doesn’t appear to be live yet).

The alter stone, which we now know is from Scotland, may have been a gift or marker of political alliance
