The Democratic Party is so committed to mistrusting and de-emphasizing grassroots swells of support that they legitimately believe “issues” are a thing that they direct and control, rather than things that they respond to and capitalize on. It makes me feel insane.

Sickening that the strong blue showing last week is being cited as a patch on the odds of this fucking crap shoot Kaine and co. are throwing with the future of the ACA. Like “oh one more thing: if you do take this opportunity we’re giving you to humiliate us? There’ll be some kids itching to fight”

This is fun, but as a left art freak I have to take a Baudrillardian view of art. Ie, that it doesn’t disrupt contrivances in order to pull audiences toward a necessary reality, only toward another depiction of the world.
Art does not question or decipher anything. The beholder does that.

The first thing this pleading interviewee does is tell her own story, in which she rather openly tries to spin an instance of her being manipulated as a process of open and full agreement —

Immediately following this weird aside, we return to Eel’s interviews, to find and new layer of narrative and another new shell game: Now one of the interviewees is trying to convince Eel to look the other way. She presents this as a formal proposal: Eel (readers?) must agree that they might do so.

Anyway, a few paragraphs after that, Straub shuffles the shells again in, through an aside
It seems clear that it’s the narrator speaking in this para — it’s not italicized like the intvws, it’s in parentheses, and Eel (the narrator’s wife, doing the interviews in story) is referred to in third.

In the middle of the lowest layer, where the narrator’s wife records unnamed testimonials, there is suddenly a voice that presents unexpectedly — knowing, withholding, and setting boundaries. A lot of extremely weird stuff is happening in this passage
