electric underground reviews are a fun experience because i agree with a lot of his game design thoughts, i think his arguments are well considered and evidenced even when i have a different perspective but he cannot help himself from going and also the fucking modern journalists and devs are babies

NEW VIDEO! In which I consider, as the games explain them, the rules of one of Metal Gear Solid's foundational storytelling tools—the codec. The resulting thought experiment goes some places, exploring how we think about games relative to other art, because of course it does.

Hope you enjoy it!

So this was a talk about magic tricks. Things that anyone, at any scale of development, could do to make their work more special. It's also a bit of a manifesto, it's kinda funny how much of this I ended up applying to TRON: Catalyst, which we started on a couple years after I wrote this.

This thread is the perfect example of why I don't care about genre definitions. OP shows evidence of Zelda being considered an RPG in Japan in the 90s but people just go "my definition is different".

They're all correct. There's no global, atemporal & pancultural definition — it's all contextual.
When did people stop seeing Zelda as an RPG?

This is pretty amazing to see directly from Epic - a primer about the problem with stuttering in Unreal Engine: specifically about shaders compilation ctutters mainly. Really honest, and proactive, and even has a history lesson in there about the beginnings of DX12 and why DX11 was different. Cool!
