Before him on the table was strewn a disorderly collage of note-pages; some of these were very old and from his years of independent study before meeting Viktor, and some were written within the past month. The ones written more recently had been scrawled on paper of variable quality and Talis’ handwriting veered drastically between legible and something rather less than, done in a sort of spontaneous shorthand that had emerged in his haste to put ideas to paper.
“Of course, Irroll’s[1] wasn’t much help,” Talis was saying; Irroll’s had been, as a matter of fact, no help at all except to discount itself entirely. “We knew it was likely a dead end, anyway. Now, I’ve been thinking that we’re approaching this from exactly the wrong angle– which is to say, this entire time I’ve been trying to reach you.”
He looked over his shoulder with an anticipatory expression. The body on the table opposite did not stir. It had not budged an inch for an entire month except when Talis moved it himself.
“Ah, what was I saying,” said Talis to himself. “The entire time I’ve been trying to reach you, but maybe the answer- maybe the thing to do is for you to reach me.”
