The Bluesky app could sync all of your posts/likes/follows/images to your phone the way iCloud syncs Photos to the cloud.

I pushed hard for this as a priority because, if done well, it could drive home how different Bluesky is from anything before it: you're in control and you own your data.

It should be possible to run Bluesky with ~250 million users with just hundreds of servers.

All the big centralized social apps use hundreds of thousands of servers (or more).

Part of that is better hardware and software and part is better design.

This is a big reason they can be challenged now.
In case you missed it: Bluesky runs on-prem. They migrated off of AWS months back.

So yeah, they DO need to put orders in for servers! (Good luck to the dev team!)

nice background for situation rooms
Ever wanted to know the amount of profanity flowing through Bluesky at any one moment? Me neither, but I still ended up making this: SwearSky, a flow of foul language uttered by Bluesky users.
⚠️ NSFW ⚠️ as it literally yells swear words at you.

The more people using domain handles, the better!

To some people it feels like they're being asked to eat their vegetables but it's really great for their long-term independence and for follower trust.

Domains are a necessary and critical bridge from centralization to decentralization of control.
There's never been social like this!

If atproto is successful at making domain handles the standard for social, you'll want to be using markcuban.com across all of them.

(but good news: you can switch at any point, you won't lose followers or break anything)

To be clear, we do have plans for scaling, we just kinda expected more than a couple days notice before getting blasted with a million new users a day.
The team is rapidly deploying fixes and new software to adapt. More servers in the mail.

If this whole non-archival relay thing moves forward as is, it means pretty much any dev can run a relay. Requirements move down to ~8 cores, 16gb ram, ~2Tb ssd (can reduce this too) and as much bandwidth as you want to provide to your downstream users

Obv would scale with network, but a good start

When I was 5, I loved science, which I took to be planets and magnets and chemicals and shit.

Soon I realized science was a collective human activity, and these were just the objects of its attention.

Anyway, whenever I read an OpEd on how science isn't political, I think "Are you 5 years old?"

it surprises me every time how the brain adapts. a few days ago i was feeling completely lost in these Android traces and flamegraphs. now i’m pretty comfortable. i remember the shape of some of them, they’re like places i visited. i can spot when a pattern’s different, have plans on what to do next

Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance. Each year, the trans community loses too many lives, especially trans women of color, to hate and violence.

More than ever, we must stand by our trans family and support them, hold space for them, and insist the scapegoating and targeting stop.

Now.

Right-wingers are not coming to this platform for any reason other than to be obnoxious trolls to people who just want to be left alone. They are not here for any useful or constructive purpose. They only want to tear down and insult. It’s all they know. It’s how they live.
