Some progress: On Tuesday the sustainability committee in the 🇫🇷 Assemblée nationale adopted in 1st reading an amendment to the 2026 budget proposing 5.5 M € for subsidies in order to resume the Berlin/Vienna-Paris night train service in Spring 2026. #ouiautraindenuit

Bad news for night train lovers: 🌙 The Paris–Berlin/Vienna connection ends this December, and the Berlin–Stockholm route will follow in 2026. Politics, not passengers, are derailing Europe’s night trains. We need fair conditions & stable support for sustainable travel. 🚆💔

Bad news: ÖBB has amended its contract with Siemens Mobility for the delivery of new passenger coaches. This means that no further Nightjet trains will be ordered (for the time being) – 33 seven-coach units were planned, 24 of which have been delivered to date.

📅 On 07/05, EU 🇪🇺Commission finally published its Guidelines on Track Access Charges. We urged recognition of #nighttrains as own segment.
✅ While regulatory change is still needed, the Guidelines now promote this and
✅ recommends to only charge direct cost for night trains.
A great step forward!

C‘est fait! Today at a notary‘s office in Brugge🇧🇪 we finally signed the French-language deed establishing Back-on-Track Europe AISBL as an international non-profit association - to be better represented at EU level. For practical reasons founding groups were 🇧🇪🇩🇪🇨🇭&🇬🇧 others follow soon.

🍾 We did it. On Monday we transformed ourselves into Back-on-Track Europe a.i.s.b.l., an international non-profit under Belgian law in order to gain more influence on EU 🇪🇺 institutions (partly requiring legal status). Thanks to our donors from 14 countries who supported this!

To get more long-distance #nighttrains Europe should prepare its network for higher average speeds. A new study funded by the German Environmental Agency (UBA) suggests to focus on these 9 core lines (partly following the TEN-T network of main lines): https://buff.ly/3TeKgvj
