Just received a HUGE (for me) influx of followers, so here’s a brief intro:

I’m a PhD candidate working on epichoric Greco-Roman myth and landscape - using myth to find local, subaltern voices! I also dabble in digital scholarship and occasionally teach martial arts (mostly Aikido).
Someday, someone will tell me to get serious with my slides.

That day was not Saturday.

Many thanks to the Maine Classical Association for inviting me to present on my research at their fall meeting this past weekend!

I’m feeling a little overwhelmed by the positive response that this paper has received so far. Many thanks to everyone who turned out for the incredible panel this morning!
After a very long day of travel, I'm looking forward to giving this paper tomorrow morning! It's a new foray for me into some Early Christian material (even if it does begin with myth). If you're at #CAAS2025, I'd love to see you!

Offer still stands ...
Okay teaching colleagues & Historical Game Studies folk. Time to schedule my year.

I like to give a few remote talks yearly to classes or groups that specifically want me & my work. Usually gratis, just because I think I know some good stuff to share.

So ... 1/

Seeking #accessibility recs.

My grandmother has always been HOH and recently experienced total hearing loss. I’m looking for live transcription apps that could help facilitate communication between her and other members of our family. We are split between iOS and Android users.

I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE.

This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined.

It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.

Excited to share that I will be at the #AIASCS in San Francisco this winter to give a paper that considers armed dances as martial arts practices. ⚔️💃🕺🥋

A bit of a departure from my recent conference topics - which were connected with the (nearing completion) dissertation - but it should be fun!

Looking forward to dipping my toes into some Late Antique / Early Christian material at #CAAS2025 this fall. I’ll be giving a paper on Aura as a model of “bad” virginity in Nonnos’ Dionysiaca. Really grateful to have these smaller conferences for trying out ideas.

(Now to finish the dissertation…)

A question for fellow academics, classicists, and / or humanists:

If an application field asks you to “state briefly X (expertise, future plans, etc.)” in an essay format, but does not include a word or character count, what would your reasonable expectations about length be?

Systems of notation in academic monographs by increasing levels of depravity:

1. Footnotes
2. Chapter endnotes in an edited volume
3. Endnotes
4. Chapter endnotes in a single-authored volume

(Assuming a hard-copy book).

Call and email your politicians
Found out that TWENTY emails is considered a lot to politicians on an issue.

TWENTY.

As in, they call that getting slammed.

So next time you see a request to email your rep, or call, keep that in mind.

TWENTY is a lot.

The Trump Administration's list of censored scientific terms that get NSF grant proposals flagged contains "women” and “female”, but no mention of “men” or “male.” There is “black” and “indigenous” on this list, but no “white.” The only identity not censored is mine.

This is what revisionist history looks like, in real time. And this also is why it might appear that archaeologists and historians have to dig deep to discover the existence of powerful women and marginalized groups -- because their legacies are so often erased.
