I poured myself a mug of black coffee from an urn, forgoing an espresso drink that might take a while to make, and put three sugars into it. My experience had taught me that the Club made its coffee like its mixed drinks: very strong and I was right. The bitterness bit into my tongue and I winced as I took a sip and turned to try to find a table to sit at. The only open chair I saw was next to James Adcock in her white dress, her ostrich feathers sitting on the table, having been removed at some point. James had developed a reputation in the last few years of being a raging bitch. She wasn’t that way in middle school, from what I knew, but gradually turned into the worst version of herself and college wasn’t kind to her. Some people just can’t handle being on their own. Most of the time, that meant drinking too much and not going to class. I could name a handful of guys I went to school with who went that route, but a complete personality change was much rarer. It did happen, though. I had seen it with a friend of mine, Daisy. She went the other way and started out a cold-hearted bitch but blossomed into a lovely, friendly girl when she left the state for college. Daisy was a product of her environment and getting out of Alabama was the best thing that ever happened to her.
