I’m quarantining in the apartment of my mother-in-law, who is out of town, and taking pictures of the stuff in it.
A photograph of some knick-knacks and tchotchkes, including a porcelain figurine of a sweeping woman, a stone walrus, and some oil lamps. I was messing around with my camera because I’m bored, so for this shot I closed the blinds and got out a tripod. For this shot I did a two-second exposure at ISO 100. My aperture was pretty wide; I tried some with a narrower aperture and even longer shutter, but the deeper field of focus made the composition too cluttered. I’m pretty happy with the result. Since the light was all ambient, it’s very even, and there’s hard any noise. The textures came out pleasant too, in a way that fits the overall tackiness of the image. Fun times!

A black-and-white photograph of the "The Hive" by Elmgreen & Dragset, a public sculpture that hangs from the ceiling in one of the entrances to the Moynihan Train Hall. It's a kind of abstract image; it looks like a glowing futuristic city, but the skyscrapers are very close together. There are a lot of geometric shapes, mostly cubes and rectangles but some circles too for variety. I took a handful of pictures, and this one wound up with the most pleasing composition; I can't say I framed it all that deliberately.

Art deco detail

Look, there’s the moon! It only takes up about a thousandth of a percent of our hemisphere of the sky—meaning it would take a hundred thousand moons to fill up—but it looms large when it glows in the darkness of the night. Just think of how little of the light that strikes the lunar surface reaches our planet, to say nothing of how few stray rays manage to thread the length of a zoom lens to stream through the widest but still quite narrow F-stop the camera allows. And yet here is a picture of the moon that I saw. And because of the lens, there is more detail than our unaided eyes could make out. Look again, this is the moon I saw, and then some. And you can see that same moon from where you are. Take a picture, although it won’t last as long.

There are photons that originate in the nuclear fusion taking place in the sun that then radiate out into space in countless directions, some of which happen to bounce off a tiny green bird that can hover. Once more they bounce off in countless directions. We have found away to catch a narrow quiver of these photon arrows, much as our eyes do, through a small, adjustable aperture and thence through a serious of transparent but fairly dense materials like tissue or vitreous humor or, in this glass, until an infinitesimal fraction of the original radiating of photons strike a sensor. Not a retina with a fovea and a macula but a sensor. The sensor digitizes the energy impulse made by the impact of the photons, and the digital information is recorded and processed, much as a brain processes in the visual cortex and stores as memory. The silicon processing is surpassed by what a brain can do with visual information, but the storage certainly seems superior. I hope I don’t take this amazing opportunity, to technologically mimic what the eye does and then guide the clumsy digital processing with my more sophisticated brain so that the result is, more or less, not uncanny. Then I can take the result, replicate it, disseminate it globally, and other people can almost see what I see. And isn’t that what it’s all about?

My birthday is coming up, and my wife said I could buy myself the camera I've been coveting as a present. But last night I started wondering if I was getting too caught up in desire for consumer goods and attachment to worldly things. Maybe I'm just chasing the high I got from my last new camera, and with diminishing returns. Do I want to perpetuate this cycle? But then I thought that my life is kind of rough right now and the world is falling apart, and at least this is giving me some joy. So who knows? Also, in general I'm not a big gear head. I'm a musician, and I don't generally focus on instruments and equipment. So if I want a new camera (and a used one at that, and also not at all extravagant as cameras go), maybe I should just get one. FD 50mm, f/5, ISO 100, 1/200
