Betty’s family announced her passing and has requested privacy during this time. In lieu of flowers, they’ve asked that those wishing to honor her legacy consider donations to Betty Reid Soskin Middle School and to a forthcoming film documenting her remarkable life.

A passage from The Rattle of Bones that says: By dinner, Tabitha was uncomfortable enough that she took her jacket completely off. Miguel kept bringing her water, which she stopped pretending to drink. Using the bathroom was painful, not just because of her knee, but her aching body. She still hadn't started shivering, but she could feel the shakes coming on. Her teeth clenched, no matter how much she tried to relax. Miguel felt her head for the thirtieth time that day. "You're getting a little hotter," he said softly as he felt a long her cheek. "What do I do?" "I've gotta keep cold, but not freezing." She licked her lips. "Miguel, if it gets worse, don't worry about me. Just go to your grandma's. You know the way, right?" "Yeah, but-" "If I get worse, go see your grandma. Tell Charlie what happened. You take Farrah, the guns,all the supplies, and go. Promise me." There was a moment of silence. In that moment, Tabitha saw a figure behind Miguel. It pressed a hand on the window and leaned down. It was David. The hole in his head leaked as he knocked on the window twice. Neither Miguel nor Farrah reacted, and he was gone. "Promise me." Miguel's lips quivered, his brows creasing as he swallowed. Tabitha knew this wasn't easy for him, that leaving her behind was scary. She wasn't even sure he'd survive. But leaving her behind was his best chance at survival. He blew out a shaky breath. "I promise."
