Awash In Time

I have a time machine, but not the instructions. Join me as I unravel its capabilities, purpose and whence it came.
Here’s a problem with going back in time to the 30s to impede Nazi war efforts, I don’t speak German. That’ll make me stand out in a time of rampant nationalism.

WW II was horrible. Churchill’s temporal secretary has asked me to give him an advantage by telling him how Germany is re-arming itself. Instead of doing that, why don’t I go and impede the Nazi’s war efforts myself?
March 20, 2025 at 5:56 PM
I can take general news back to Churchill’s temporal secretary, but what’s the point? It will just be like hearsay. Or worse, I'll be Cassandra for last years of the Empire.

I pack the history books, set to the timepad to 1933, hit go, but nothing happens. Then I see the timepad flashing.

“WARNING: Transportation of information technology not permitted!”

They’re books!

I’ve been reading about the start of WW II to help prepare Churchill’s team. There is so much information to absorb, and some conflicting theories. I decide to just bring the books back to 1933 and let the temporal secretary sort it out.
March 11, 2025 at 4:12 PM
Tasked with returning to 1933 to tell Churchill’s temporal secretary what happens next. He wants to prepare. But what to tell him? The whole war? The first important part about the Battle of Britain? Dunkirk? The awful lengths that the war went to?
March 11, 2025 at 4:08 PM
Oh, a conflict starts all right. How do I describe when and how WW II starts? The nice thing about time travel is I can think about this for a while, and he won’t know how long it took me.

I bid farewell and say I will return to 1933 with answers.

In 1933. “I can’t tell you what happens, I’m a time traveller, not a historian.” Shame his name isn’t Jim.

“Don’t be obstructive, go back to your present and read a book, then come back here.”

“What do you want to know?”

“Does a conflict start and when? How much time do we have to prepare?”

In 1933 London with Churchill’s temporal secretary.

“We know Germany is re-arming and conflict is looming.”

Knew that. He continued, “Tell me what happens next.”

Can I do that? Will I create a paradox? I’ve never worried about it with my previous small interactions in time, but this is HUGE.”

Talking to Churchill’s temporal secretary.

“Where have you people been? Why hasn’t your command sent anybody? We haven’t seen a time traveller for decades!”

Command? There’s a structure?

I was sent to Churchill’s fifth private secretary, most people know he had four, this one was known as the temporary secretary. Nobody understood his actual job as the temporal secretary.

“Why is Churchill looking for somebody like me?”

“Lord Churchill. The time couriers were a closely held secret known to a few, including the First Lord of the Admiralty. As soon as Lord Churchill was reappointed he asked to be alerted to the presence of any time travellers.”

At Brooks’s in 1933. I ask for the time master, and first thing he’s says, “Good Lord man, what are you doing here? You need to be at the Admiralty, Lord Churchill is looking for you.”

Me?

“Not you, just anybody like you.”

To find answers I decided to go back to the roots of my time courier experience. The Brook’s in London which I first visited in 1837. This time I visit in 1933, the year Hitler became Chancellor. I need to learn more about Nazis and the risks of time travel.

A while ago my ideas on time travel were confronted by a distinguished gentleman on the tube. I was so shocked by his perspective I didn’t think about the important question. How did he find me?

I need answers, how do I find him?

At first I didn’t think my mild interferences in 1837 made a difference. It was so long ago (I probably have a bias to my present) but WW II is much closer to me. What were the Nazis doing? Especially near the end of the war. Wernher von Braun seemed ahead of the time.

I think of myself as an independent contract time traveller. Recently I’ve been working for the Victorian Empire. I thought of my time courier work as a harmless way to make money. Now I learn that, in aggregate, the time couriers may be affecting the flow of history.
February 23, 2025 at 11:29 AM
“How’s my time travel affecting the Victorian Empire?”

“I don’t know what you’re doing, but when I come from the Raj did not last until 1947, now it has.” I know of a number of travellers acting as time couriers, giving the Empire a distinct advantage.”

“What if this is happening over all time?”
February 20, 2025 at 3:20 PM
I've just been told not to help the Victorian Empire grow. I feel I'm only helping it become as great as our history shows. I responded, "My time travel can't change the fates."

His response, "Oh, but you can, and you mustn’t.”
February 17, 2025 at 8:31 PM
“Giving Victorian England the advantage of modern travel to connect their empire will stifle the growth of other nations, perhaps forever."

“I prefer to think of the time courier business as helping them become the greatest empire in history. I don’t believe we can change the fates.”
February 17, 2025 at 8:26 PM
More travellers are disappearing. Disconcerting, maybe I should discontinue my time courier business.

Riding the tube today, on my way to LHR to make delivery in 1837 when I was accosted by a well dressed man.

“Don't do this, the Empire should not get temporal help, it already has enough power.”
February 16, 2025 at 6:15 PM
After my third trip to 1837 India, the time master asked me if I’d seen anything suspicious. “Like what?” I said.

“I don’t know,” he responded. “One of our shipments has gone missing along with the traveller.”

“What year was the traveller passing through?” I said, hoping it wasn’t in my timeline.

Time is the friend of compound interest. I picked up my payment from Coutts today. 188 years produced a considerable sum, though not quite as much as I originally thought. There were 3 recessions before 1900, one of them lasted for 20 years!

Still, it’s enough to want to time courier again.
February 12, 2025 at 9:41 PM
“What if the bank goes under? 188 years is a long time.”

“We are assured that both Barclays and Coutts remain in operation in your time.” He’s right, they do.

“I choose Coutts.” If they were good enough for the Queen, they will be great for me.
February 11, 2025 at 8:42 PM
“A hundred pounds to ship a package across thousands of miles? That makes no sense."

“You’re forgetting 188 years of compound interest.” Oh, that’s more interesting.

“How will that work?”

“We deposit the money in a bank, you pick up the payment plus accrued interest in 2025.”
