He pushed his toes down, expecting to run his stockinged feet over the familiar pile of the rug only to recoil. Oliver stared down in horror at his shoes. He had worn his dirty shoes on the carpet. What little control he had managed to gain over his spiraling brain broke as he bit back a sob. He pulled off one shoe and threw it blindly in the direction of the coatrack. His eyes clotted with tears as he worked at the knot on the second shoe. As he flung it away from it, the door opened, batting it into the wall.

Felipe steeled himself as he left the safety of the stairs and full weight of the silence pressed in around him. In the library, no matter how quiet, there were always the sounds of people or pens scratching on paper or pages turning, but the only sounds in the archive stacks were Felipe’s muffled footfalls and the distant hiss of radiator pipes. Stale, papery air coated Felipe’s tongue, even if there didn’t appear to be a speck of dust to be found on the rows of shelves. Every shelf for as far as the eye could see contained books of documents bound in the same utilitarian cream binding with only a series of handwritten letters and numbers to differentiate them. It was disorienting. Being in this part of the archives reminded him far too much of those nightmares where no matter which way he went, he ended up back in the same place. Checking the card in his hand against the markers nailed into the shelves, Felipe tread deeper into the stacks. He had heard of people getting lost in the endless labyrinth of bones in the Paris Catacombs only to be found years later as a clothed skeleton huddled in some forgotten corner. Felipe could imagine an archivist finding his desiccated corpse lying between shelves of decades old paperwork and leaving him there as a landmark, so they could differentiate that section of cream-colored books from the rest.

Project Shop My Shelves Q3 Update!
I have still not hit the 1:2 bought to read ratio, but I made it to 1:1 which is progress.
What is it? I am trying to make a concerted effort to read the books I already own. I’ve gotten into the habit of buying new books and mostly reading those while ignoring my shelves or I buy a ton and don’t get to them in a timely manner, which leads to the first problem. Project Shop My Shelves will be where I document my progress in trying to tackle my TBR pile while minimizing what I add to it. Parts of PSMS Read double the amount of books I buy per month (if I buy 4, read 8+), 2:1 ratio Prioritize buying marginalized authors. Cis het white authors can wait in terms of preorders and purchases Be realistic about whether I like an author or what medium I prefer their work when buying future books Read through the oldest books I own, donate those I don’t jive with Keep a record of my stats and post quartertly PSMS Stats for Q3 July Bought 5 ebooks (0 ARCs), 4 physical, 0 audio Read 9 books, 3 were preexisting Ratio bought to read: 1:1 August Bought 7 ebooks (0 ARCs), 2 physical, 0 audio Read 8 books, 1 was preexisting Ratio bought to read: 9:8 September Bought 4 ebooks (0 ARC), 5 physical, 0 audio Read 8 books, 4 were preexisting Ratio bought to read: 9:8 reflecting on q3: I got SO CLOSE to a 1:1 ratio for nearly every month this quarter. I would really like to buy less and/or read more, but people keep putting out new books, lol. I am pretty happy that I kept my ratio close to an even number of read versus bought. I will say that I received a lot of books are gifts for my birthday, which don’t count but definitely add to my TBR pile. I’m hoping the same happens in November and December as I usually stop buying books for myself closer to the holidays. Maybe December will be the 1:2 month... finally.
