Day 11 of #ArtAdventCalendar
One day I came across a photo from Toronto's Archives. In 1919 a small creek that ran through the east end froze. I love that any small patch of ice is a beacon call to Canadians to strap on the blades and grab the sticks.

Large painting, 36x40 horizontal The painting is mostly grey with some original pink sketch lines visible. Soft grey sky with the sun faintly burning through on the upper right side. In the distance are grey outlines of low 2 storey houses typical of the Leslieville neighbourhood in Toronto's east end. A line of hydro pp9oles strings along the street horizontally apprx 1/3 down from the top of the painting. The bottom 2/3 of the painting is a field that gives way to a gulley with areas of ice from a small creek that runs along the bottom of the gulley. A few bare trees on top of the hills and a few people stand at street level looking down into the gulley where a group of 6 people stand on a small patch of ice holding hockey sticks. A few rocks stick up through the ice and snow. The feeling is frosty but cozy. Everything is covered with snow and ice, the people are bundled up.

Day 15 of #ArtAdventCalendar I love how hockey is woven into Canadian culture. You can be sure that when there's a cold snap, lots of people's first thought is "I bet the pond/river/lake has frozen over!" and grab their skates and sticks.

Day 19 of #ArtAdventCalendar.
It's a cold, windy day in Toronto today. When I worked downtown, there were many winter days that I hurried up Bay St. on my lunch hour to shop, then rushed back down to the office. Bay St. is ALWAYS windy and the lunch hour outing above ground was as quick as possibly.
A view south on Bay Street in Toronto, from Richmond St. The buildings rise up in either side of the street. A steady stream of traffic is heading north towards the viewer. On the left side five people are walking south. Three are together in the distance, and two singles. Each of them are bundled up, shoulders hunched against the cold and they're throwing long pink shadows behind them. The sky above is grey and cloudy with a bright sun shining through. The style is cartoonish and shows a community that though they're all in the same place, they're separated from each other in cars, walking alone.
