I am ill, off from work and alone with my own thoughts for a spell. Wished a few US friends a happy 4th of July and got into #writing. I didn't write a #poem in quite some time.
An overgrown and ruined building. A Poem superimposed over it. It reads: Freedom is an orchid, cruelty 's a weed. With petals frail and delicate and with a scent so sweet, orchids are cosmopolitan, found most everywhere. By rights not metropolitan wouldn't need our care. But transplanted from the wilderness, where by nature is its home, in culture's gardens wilfulness, where nature doesn't roam, by definition, freedom's flower, is helpless here and weak. Needs tender keeping every hour, conditions quite unique, proper water, soil and light and moisture in the air. As long we care for it just right, it's beautiful and fair Cruelty needs just a crack, any space untended, any dirt along the track, where diligence has ended. Any place we care not keep, for gardening is hard, don't investigate too deep, for gardening 's an art. In due time the garden chokes when from there it creeps, overtakes, teases, provokes, towards where our flower sleeps. Infestuous overgrowth and sordid destruction from its seed. For freedom is an orchid and cruelty a weed.

Did I know Silverstein's books were banned? No. Could I have guessed the reason, just by reading them decades, after the fact? Also no.

A little barzaletta of six Stanzas, where the rhyme criss-crosses just like my attention. And I blame my poor Sky-Kitten for it! Don't look at me like that! It quite literally is simply "a little joke".
A three coloured Cat looking towards the right. A poem is overlaid the picture which reads: See, I can concentrate quite well, on... What the hell? Oh, that's just great! Make me cry, you silly kitten, have me bitten! Now where was I? I concentrate so easily... Did you just chase a bee? Please wait! Get Yourself hurt, you foolish cat. Just like that, doesn't listen to a word I say. Be still and listen please! I'm on my knees, do as I will. I will... wait, what did I just do? Scatterbrained, you. I forgot.

Allotment Hound He wasn’t my dog but he followed me around I called him AH. The Allotment Hound. Watching him scrabbling in the earth taught me how to dig deep. Down to the darker, richer soil filling my tubers with the nutrients that made them grow quicker, thicker, stronger. He watched as I worked. I’ve never been one to shy away from cultivating my lines, tending after the shoots and leaves, providing for them with fresh water from the old can I filled at the tap at the gate, always pouring some into a hubcap bowl for that dog to lap at. I was never one for engaging with the others. I let them tend their own patches. From time to time I would share a word, commenting on the quality of their produce, giving out tips, when to plant, when to harvest. How to deal with frost and drought. I preferred the company of that hound. Some nights I would sit out with him watching it the colours fade from cobalt to navy to black. When I found it hard to stay on theme I would look into his big brown eyes and it was as if he was saying “Be Bold” “Concrete over Abstract” The day they came to concrete over the allotment I took that dog home with me But it wasn’t the same in my tiny kitchen garden. I think he died of a broken heart I know that I almost did I had him cremated by the council I blended a fertiliser from the ashes that they gave me And grew myself a few carrots and potatoes I have my name down for another allotment…
