The #HayliGubbi #eruption in Afar, Ethiopia, is the first documented eruption at this poorly known volcano.

Was it entirely unexpected?
Difficult to say - Berhe Goitom and colleagues already reported some seismicity in 2011-2012 so perhaps there was already some geophysical unrest for a while:

As Hurricane Melissa makes landfall in Jamaica, we can see its approach over the past few days on seismometers. Strong winds generated by hurricanes create ocean waves and pressure fluctuations that cause stronger up and down movements in the water column, which seismometers record.

Leaving the Aeolien islands with a bang.

Didn't quite understand what I was getting when I ordered the Vulcano pizza 😅.

Think I've hit my pizza dough quota for awhile

Fieldwork finished, was a good one!

Now we patiently wait to see if the boats will resume; Aeolien islands living up to their name.

Just about finishing up on Panarea island, over two hundred short-term nodal deployments towards mapping hydrothermal alteration, with @jonaspaetzel.bsky.social and Adrian Thorn.

Having Stromboli as an 'office' view for the past few days has been quite something! A couple more days of fieldwork planned, then a cheeky trip to the volcano for a bit of tourism ;)

Definitely a bunch of fieldwork left unshared during the past year, but this can change ;)

Currently undertaking fieldwork in Panarea, Italy, with scientists from Brussels, Ghent, and Namur, to map zones of hydrothermal alteration. Worse places to be in October 😎.

This was not a planned shot ^^; almost surprisingly, first time visiting a UK institution.
Visiting the department this week is Dr. Alexander Yates @asyates2.bsky.social from @ulbruxelles.bsky.social. Today, Alec started our VolcCoffee seminar series with a presentation on his research into seismic noises and how they can be used to improve our understanding of volcanic systems! 🌋🌐📈

Flying in for a 2 week visit to University of Helsinki 👌

On the same day that i graduated from my first degree eleven years ago, i defended my PhD 🙂. Thanks to FB for letting me know of that little coincidence.

And thanks to this great team 👌👌 (sorry Co, there isnt one photo where at least one of us isnt looking the wrong way 😅).

On to 🇧🇪 for a Post-doc.

Funny little coincidence. Said today I would make scones for the lab; would be the first time since my last ones were sent flying by the Kaikoura earthquake (having been left out on a tray).

Just realised it was the 7-year anniversary today of the EQ ^^. Stars are aligned to remake these scones.

Haven't seen this posted on here yet, but saw this in a twitter post (map.is), a nice free tool that can be used to view recent IMO earthquake locations. Here's the activity in the last 6 hours (for example).

Just bringing it here as I'm trying to avoid using twitter (X) if i can!

Jersey in the news (the little island where I was born).

Looks like a tornado that formed in Jersey during Storm Ciaràn (last week) was perhaps the largest in the British Isles for around 70 years.

Certainly the only Jersey tornado in my lifetime!

First Bourget-du-Lac photo on bluesky 😎. Perhaps a few weeks more of reasonable swimming temperatures (depending who you ask 😄).

Interesting read. Its hard to imagine the difficulty having to make a call to evacuate following unrest at a supervolcano, where precursory activity may likely be sustained for many months to years. So many unknowns.
Things are getting restless at the Campi Flegrei in Italy. Here's what the situation is right now and what could happen. Whether an eruption occurs (unlikely) or not, the decisions for emergency planners and volcanologists are daunting. www.discovermagazine.com/planet-earth...
Is It Time to Start Worrying About an Eruption at the Campi Flegrei?
One of the most active calderas on Earth is showing increasing signs of restlessness. Does this mean we need to be worried about an eruption? The answer right now is ... maybe?

Campi Flegrei, close to Italian town of Napoli, is considered as the most dangerous volcanic area in Europe. Ongoing seismic activity is quite strong with magnitude 4.2 and 4.0 #earthquakes on 26/09 and 02/10 respectively. ⚒️

PhD is in 😎. To celebrate, here's a first look at some data from the thesis.

Plot shows my approximate working hours through the month of September 😅 (from a focus app Forest).

Definitely time to rediscover a normal life.

Hi all :)

Happy to be trying this platform! Look forward to seeing the community develop (hopefully) towards what Twitter used to be.

I'll post a proper introduction soon... once I've handed in my PhD thesis in the next 1-2 weeks and can justify the procrastination 😅.
