Ah yes, that famous event where we colonized England and changed what language we spoke.

The people who fought in the American revolution literally were English! (Most of them.) A large factor in the rebellion was that England refused to treat Colonials as the Englishmen they felt themselves to be.

We leaned into all the Amazing Grace storytelling in an attempt to shame American denialists and accept our own legacy. But it's a wildly ahistorical take.

Definitely--it's very tied up with our attempts to get our own country to reckon with nostalgia for the Confederacy. There was a trend of pointing to Brits and saying "they abolished slavery with an act of parliament, they didnt need a war!"
November 17, 2025 at 1:36 AM
So you're taught that all slavery in the US before 1776 is British slavery?
November 17, 2025 at 1:31 AM
they think Americans did it. they strangely forget who "Americans" were for most of that time.

It's always been very bizarre to me how (online at least) people talk about American slavery as though it wasn't invented by Europeans. They talk about the respective abolitions of US and British slavery as though England couldn't have abolished US slavery back when they, yknow, owned it.

(And yes, I suspect you're right that it's related to three-cuing--or to similar educational travesties.)

I feel the same way when people call behavior a "red flag" but it's actually just flagrantly awful behavior.

Good question, since I do think he might be genuinely fucking crazy.

With a lot of these people--not even right wingers, just this kind of blowhard bully--they don't know if they believe what they say. They think they have the RIGHT to believe it. The defiance is what they believe in.

The moral of the story: forget about what AI *can* do.

Copyright and enshittification mean technology already works as well as companies want it to.

What is AI *likely* to do?

My point is: this isn't fancy AI. This is technology that's existed for years and demonstrably works. But private corporations 1) actively guard access to functionality and 2) do not care if things work well in ways that don't continually profit them.

(When it was just called "Morning," Spotify would of course play some random stranger's playlist or album with that word in the name, no matter how the request was phrased.)
November 12, 2025 at 10:08 PM
Google and Spotify are just in some kind of passive-aggressive fight either with each other or with me, specifically over my "Morning" playlist—the one that starts with Daði Freyr, Phoenix, and The Narcissist's Cookbook—so that no matter what it's called, the name will be outrageously misheard.
November 12, 2025 at 10:07 PM
...A year or so later, my speakers no longer recognize names of Spotify playlists it had previously recognized. Even when I change the names. Even when they're typed in.

There is literally no one, at Google or Spotify, who can help with this.
