Given how much debt has become a part of the election, I though it would be a great topic for a #5Graphs thread 📊🧵!

For me, contextualising public finance is critical because it illustrates how most commentary (& even policies) fail us when it comes to the economy. #ausecon #auspol (1/23)
If there is one political essay you read this year, you really should make it this one. Trav is one of our best minds when it comes to democracy and institutional reform, and this is a prime example.
I’m honoured to be featured alongside some of Australia’s biggest names in wonkdom in the summer issue of Inflection Points.

My paper is the culmination of 4 years work on declining civic participation — and why other researchers into the phenomenon have a blind spot for political parties.

Sussan Ley once said she loved the "theatrics" of punk. She seems strangely unaware of what those theatrics were, @theshufflediary.bsky.social writes.

University of Technology Sydney ordered a spreadsheet from KPMG targeting individual academics by research income, which might contravene the bargaining agreement. They repeatedly denied it even existed for several info requests. But that wasn't true. www.thesaturdaypaper.com.au/news/educati...
Exclusive: University sought secret KPMG staff spreadsheet
The University of Technology Sydney denied the existence of a KPMG spreadsheet ranking the research performance of academics, in breach of its EBA, until it was forced to release it.

For any of my fellow Academics/Researchers/Big Weird Nerds, what is everyone using for quantitative analysis these days? Is NVivo still the go, or have we switched?

Bonus points if there’s a unicorn out there that has automated transcription, and isn’t ridiculously expensive.

Silksong, Australia’s biggest cultural export since Bluey and Fury Road came out today.

It’s expected to make roughly $500 mil in sales over the next few months. That’s even more than Fury Road’s global box office take.

It’ll be interesting to see how — if at all — our legacy news media covers it.

Ok, I do not understand why everyone loves How To Make Gravy so much. It’s not Paul’s best song, and more importantly, it’s not even the best song about writing a letter home on Christmas when you’re in prison…. Four Walls by Chisel is right there. #hottest100

Good coverage of the submission that I wrote with my comrade and Labor for Housing co-convenor Jules.

We need to stop the preferential treatment of land as an asset, and raise revenue to invest in public housing.

Chalmers urged to overhaul CGT discount on housing
Labor for Housing says savings from reforming CGT could be used to scrap GST on goods and services used to build, maintain and manage state public housing.

Can any #auspol psephologist clarify something for me? I must be missing something!

When 18-35 & 35-49 outnumber older generations, & women outnumber men (graphics by @joshnicholas.com et. al), why aren’t the ALP ahead in 2PP nationally?

As always, great to see @kristin8x.antipovertycentre.org standing up for the poorest in our incredibly rich country.

As someone with a lived experience of being unhoused, and relying on assistance, I’m so thankful that the voices of the outcast are being amplified.

Now that I’m back on social media, I thought it might be useful to kick things off with one of my classic #5Graph threads 🧵

Today, I thought I’d dive into the productivity debate which has been raging around construction, & do some good old fashioned mythbusting. (1/27)
