New Zealand introduced an EV tax. Within three months, EV sales fell from 45 to 15 per cent. In the search for revenue lost from fuel excise, Australia wants to avoid making the same mistake.

The cruel irony? The RBA’s fix for inflation is to make those same people fear for their jobs.

A policy of deliberate scarcity.

An “unemployed buffer stock” — treating human lives as shock absorbers for the data line. #Ausecon #econ

The Greens have just secured a Senate inquiry into the capital gains tax (CGT) discount, exposing one of the most regressive tax breaks in Australia’s system which is inflating house prices by incentivising speculative investment in property!

🍻 to Mon. Beer prices in Oz are just nuts - pints which go for $3 AUD in Prague are $16 in Sydney.

We don't tax the things we should (looking at you gas & other multinats) and therefore pay too much for other stuff.

Having a cold one has never been more expensive in Australia.

This week I’ll be moving an amendment to freeze beer excise indexation—because a schooner shouldn’t cost $11 in Melbourne when it’s $5 in Tokyo.

Sounds good to me.

Sane even. What say you #auspol & #ausecon ?
All Australians should benefit from the sale of our resources - not just a few mining magnates. We must not see a repeat of what has happened with our gas exports where we’ve being essentially giving it away for free. Time to build a sovereign wealth fund.

It is the perfect time for it, Dr Ryan is correct.

Anyone know?

Congratulations to the Government for securing a deal to grow Australia's critical minerals industry and put us in the running to become clean tech heavyweight, but it's a shame to see the PM return empty-handed on another critical sector of our economy.

If you're in Australia, my Boyer lecture will be on ABC in about 20 minutes. I'll wave to you from inside your TV. Should also be on iview if you're not near your telly.
This is sort of a thing, and I'm kind of proud of myself. The thing: I'm giving the keynote Boyer Lecture this year. Won't mean much to non-Aussies, but it's the leading annual "public intellectual" lecture series in my native Australia, and it means a lot to me.

Prelim Domain auction clearances
Syd 72%=final ~70%,Oct norm 63%
Mel 73%=final ~69%,Oct norm 64%
Clearances are down a bit so far this mth (looks seasonal) but still strong helped by lower rates, the boost to FHBs from the expanded 5% deposit scheme & constrained supply.

The real solutions lie not with the RBA, but with targeted government action (fiscal policy). We should be debating:

✅ Strategic price caps on essentials like energy.
✅ Public investment to fix supply chain bottlenecks.
✅ An excess profits tax to curb corporate greed.

Oz media does not assist us in navigating to a better world, for the most part. 👀👇

Indi publications, ABC/SBS and AFR contributors such as @craigemerson.bsky.social excepted.

Luckily and increasingly however, we are ignoring MSM.. and that's a good thing.
