Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Twenty years after I started college @carleton.edu I got to spend part of my 38th birthday enjoying the Arb, ~800 acres adjacent to campus. Even though I ran in the arb almost every day as a student, I still took it for granted! What a remarkable place 🍂

So relieved to see that Mellon will be providing emergency relief funding the US’s state and jurisdictional humanities councils.
If I learned one thing during my years at NEH, it was how crucial these organizations are to our public humanities infrastructure.

As someone deeply passionate about online community preservation, not only is this a great essay, it really gets at *why* such preservation matters. Not every interaction needs to be saved, but these communities deserve to be remembered.
I'm at @theverge.com today talking about digital decay, link rot, watching my work slowly being erased from the internet, and how it makes me feel like I am fading away.
What happens when the internet disappears?
Huge swaths of the web are vanishing. What does that do to our culture?

I am a terrible photographer so didn't do a great job capturing the moment- but the Midwest crew enjoyed sandwiches while watching the Archival Resistance and Cultural Access panel yesterday at #ACH2024 @juliapoly.bsky.social, Maria Jose Afanador, and Mohammed Rashid were amazing.
