Excited to have a chapter in this, co-written with the ever-amazing @chelseagunn.bsky.social

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Twenty years after I started college @carleton.edu I got to spend part of my 38th birthday enjoying the Arb, ~800 acres adjacent to campus. Even though I ran in the arb almost every day as a student, I still took it for granted! What a remarkable place 🍂

So grateful to the organizers and presenters @civicsoftech.bsky.social for "Communal Resistance to Artificial Systems." Learning so much from Lee Skallerup Bessette and her class coursesites.georgetown.domains/writ-1150-16... (reminding me that I wrote a speech about the pencil as an 8-year-old?)

OCLC has laid 80 people off, not just because of IMLS cuts but explicitly because they're trying to use AI to do the work of library professionals.

Ready to admit AI is a huge labor problem yet?

Forget innovation. This morning at Digital IDEAS Day 3, Shannon Mattern reminded us that maintenance is radical.
We talked about care as a method, refusal as a practice, and the politics of keeping things running.

So relieved to see that Mellon will be providing emergency relief funding the US’s state and jurisdictional humanities councils.

If I learned one thing during my years at NEH, it was how crucial these organizations are to our public humanities infrastructure.

Yes I embroidered angry eyebrows on a bunch of penguins and armed them with bullions and practiced some bullion lettering in support of NEH. Such are the times. #HandsOff #DHmakes

Love to get an email from my professional org @ach.bsky.social within hours of it surfacing that DOGE had come for NEH, with specific steps people can take, a form to collect info on research impacts, and a commitment to further advocacy. Keep it up, ACH.

MLA, AHA & friends should take note.

As someone deeply passionate about online community preservation, not only is this a great essay, it really gets at *why* such preservation matters. Not every interaction needs to be saved, but these communities deserve to be remembered.
I'm at @theverge.com today talking about digital decay, link rot, watching my work slowly being erased from the internet, and how it makes me feel like I am fading away.
What happens when the internet disappears?
Huge swaths of the web are vanishing. What does that do to our culture?

I haven't been posting much bc I'm sitting in gratitude. The #ACH2024 keynote with T-Kay Sangwand and K.J. Rawson's keynote is needed, essential.

Sangwand: It is time to "build capacities for memory work outside institutions."
Rawson: "We need more terminology to get it [representation] right."
