I work as an architect and I went to a talk earlier this year where it was discussed how it didn't work well for industrial buildings. Anything with earthwork is expensive, but also industrial applications that run 24/7 actually dump too much heat in the ground making the system less effective.

There is a great podcast that covers aviation disasters (which is where I heard about the Gimli Glider) called Black Box Down. I thought it'd make me anxious to fly, but in most cases there is a whole series of unfortunate events that lead to crashes, not just one thing going wrong.
