33 years ago - today - my family arrived in Vienna, Austria 🇦🇹

We were lucky enough to get out of the Yugoslav Civil War.

The courage of my parents and a tremendous amount of luck are the reasons why I can call myself a European 🇪🇺

1/ Time to sift through ENTSO-E's Market Report, which they released yesterday.

My Qs:
- What happened between June'24 and May'25?
- What are current trends?
- What are risks and opportunities?

Will share what grabs my attention in this thread 🧵

What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

The reason why you wait for a website to load is frequently not the site content itself but all the programmatic advertising magic in the background(audience analysis; bid auction on your impression; customized ad serving; etc) 🤷‍♂️
What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

The most common protective device on the power grid is fuses. Just big fuses. Ranging anywhere from 10 to 150 amps usually, but at 7200+ volts. That bang you heard when the power went out? Probably a fuse blowing.

Seabed (“Bottom”) mines are much more threatening to ships than fancy anti-ship missiles

f*ck it, we'll do it live!
That glamorous podcasting life - when you have dogs.

Kudos to @artlapinsch.com for hanging in there - episode on the naming of things and why words matter in climate tech is a cracker, and out soon. Insh'Allah.

Sound on to get the bit.

Climate litigation just got more interesting.
⚖️🌎 BREAKING: A German court formally established the legal precedent that major emitters can be held liable under German civil law for climate damages in a case brought by a Peruvian farmer against German energy giant RWE.

For context, after the 2019 UK outage I mentioned earlier the grid operator published an interim report in 1 week and a full report in 1 month. Admittedley more was known even within 24 hours (ie which plants faulted, broadly how the system responded). But it still takes time to do a proper autopsy.

"I would say yes. It’s not an easy argument, but it’s a valid one.”

A good read on new ways of using the courts for #conservation like we've been covering on the @mongabay.bsky.social podcast, by @samirashackle.bsky.social:
‘All other avenues have been exhausted’: Is legal action the only way to save the planet?
The long read: Monica Feria-Tinta is one of a growing number of lawyers using the courts to make governments around the world take action

Important info given today's grid failures in Spain and Portugal.

Shows how complex it is to "restart/kickstart" (i.e. black start) the grid.
A youtuber that I follow did a great explainer on how complex a black start is a couple years ago:

Spitzen Interview über den Status Quo der europäischen/internationalen Sicherheitspolitik.

Besonders gut: Grosse Themen werden mit kleinen Worten erklärt.

Tip top.

Heute startet die große Serie in „Erklär mir die Welt“ mit mir über den Krieg und was wir tun müssen, um zukünftige militärische Konflikte zu verhindern. Eine Reise zusammen mit @sator– von Thukydides bis Putin – in Teil 1 von 5 über den Krieg. „Krieg ist …“

Question for #energysky - Can you point me to some experts on EU NCCS (Network Codes on Cyber Sec) for electricity grids?

Would love to get a more "on the ground" picture beyond the legal texts & EU publications.

→ Actual efficacy
→ Preparedness
...etc.

Thanks in advance 🙏

1/ If you are a European and haven't heard of Andreas Klinger, then buckle up.

Andreas - founding CTO of Product Hunt and investor via his Prototype Capital - is currently working Brussels to make Europe more competitive.

His message: "Europe needs to be a player, not a playground."

Puntigamer, Lustig sa'ma!
HEATING WITH BEER?

Imagine drinking cold beer brewed in a nearby brewery whilst sitting in a room heated with waste heat from the brewery of the beer you drink.

It already happens in 800 homes near Austrian Puntigam brewery heated using waste heat upcycled by large heat pumps.

Does your Whatsapp search interface also look like this?

Seems like Meta shifting their attention to utilize (long-term monetize) the app.

Thoughts?

WIRED mapped DOGE’s Silicon Valley and corporate connections - go click through our interactive charts to see the significant overlap.

Of the 80 DOGE operatives we include on this list, 49 of them have connections to Elon Musk, his companies, or his greater network.

Fascinating article.

Tl;dr seems that most transformers are built-to-order and that's what's causing bottlenecks.

Q for #energysky - Why isn't there more standardization in transformer production?

NEW DATA: China's wind+solar overtakes thermal capacity🙌

39GW of solar added in Jan-Feb - a million solar panels per day🤯+ 9GW of wind

Thermal generation still dwarfs wind+solar, but new wind+solar (+nuclear+hydro) is broadly meeting elec demand growth, halting further rises

Trivia Wednesday: Why is it called Antarctica?

Arctic comes from the Greek word ἀρκτικός - "arktikos" or “near the bear” - and refers to the star constellation Ursa Major mainly found in the northern sky. Also, polar bears are only found in the Arctic/northern regions.
