Co-creating the conditions for culture change through deep deschooling & decolonising; transformational governance, self-directed education, commoning, generative approaches to conflict. Also sometimes very silly on stage. Bristol, UK.
My first ever lino print ✨

“School co-opts and corrupts the idea of learning - actually limiting the opportunities elsewhere for real learning in young people’s lives.” School is a Crime Scene by The R.Y.S.E. 🔥

How will young people learn about the things they don’t find easy or interesting? Ha! They ask for it. This group of 10-14 year olds asked me to plan a geometry session for them BECAUSE they don’t like it. They do algebra, for example, on their own for fun. Self-directed education FTW!

Cup of tea and transformational governance with @heathermarsh.bsky.social on this sunny Sunday morning. I’m so surprised I haven’t come across her work before!

I’m reading her right now! I’m super surprised I haven’t heard of her before. We’ve been thinking about and working on the same things for all this time.

This 6 foot wall of stale, pale and male barely moved but felt entitled to stand in front of several much more enthusiastic Skunk Anansie fans at Bristol Beacon tonight. It was almost as shit as the people who tried to touch Skin when she was in the mosh pit. People are terrible. The band was good.

“Are we “playing the game”, or are we being played by it?” From Hospicing Modernity by Vanessa Machado de Oliviera

Currently following everyone who has mentioned Hospicing Modernity by Vanessa Machado de Oliviera because I’m re-reading it at the moment and need to digest it in community…

I’ve been thinking about #Section28 and #comphet a lot recently, (thanks #ChappellRoan). Why don’t people talk more about how attraction to masculinity is conflated with attraction to men when we’re prevented from seeing examples of queer lives?

It might seem like we’re further away than ever but the bubbles and threads are growing stronger in the myceliorism, which is why the pushback is so strong.

There was so much in this book that I loved. It felt tender and caring, like a hug from an old friend. The big concept I took from it was how schooling and colonisation produce “percepticide”, a disconnect from our own bodies and experiences, leading to limited capacity to feel, understand and act.

What’s it like to be haunted by the ghosts of industry? How do I explain to my children what we’ve done to the world in the name of progress? I loved Open Wound by Mire Lee in the turbine hall at the Tate Modern today & it inspired an upcoming post on Myceliorism. Progressive is a regressive word.

I’ve been compulsively watching the Haka at Aotearoa New Zealand parliament. It makes me feel things for the same reason as Irish music in Belfast pubs & queer punk cabaret at squat parties. It’s anti-colonialism in action; pure hope that we can get out of this trap & reclaim the soul of humanity.

Dismantling systems outside of us sometimes asks us to shed systems that are living within us.

I really, really love books. Here are some of the ones that have been making me think; some recently, others for longer … tell me yours!

Hey, I’m new here. I’m interested in lots of things but rapid, pragmatic culture change is probably top of my list. This is what I’m working on at the moment: open.substack.com/pub/mycelior...
