Finally got to the "I want to burn it all down" portion of the gen AI-era semester, where I realize they're all using some sort of LLM to "help" organize their thoughts and it's just spitting out raw sewage onto the screen.

Yikes. Going through HS focus groups right now and one group of student's "one word to describe school" are back-to-back: Involved, Stressful, Invasive. 😩

"Stressful because you're measured in grades. And you always have to be here...then you're always thinking about being here."
Students overwhelmingly do not experience productive stress at school:

"One middle school group alone mentioned 'anxiety' 11 times and 'stress' 15 times. Students at all levels frequently mentioned stress and anxiety impacting attendance, engagement, and performance in school."

Do not normalize children dying from measles. Measles was previously eliminated in the US, thanks to vaccines.

When children die from measles, it means that adults have catastrophically failed to protect them because they have rejected basic science.

I have wonderful students. Undergraduates. Instead of giving standard tests, I ask them to write summary topic papers in which they have to use foundational information to support an argument related to a broader concept. I want to share two opening paragraphs with you.

"Stunningly, however, those who had learned expecting to be tested had forgotten much more. Their superior rote memorization was no longer in evidence a few days later. Evidently, they memorized the material for the test, and when the test was over, they pulled the plug and let it drain out."

The goal is have students think conceptually about the brain while gaining foundational knowledge about it rather than just providing the foundational knowledge. If that makes sense to you, I would love your suggestions. 6. #neuroscience #introtoBN

Rather than discuss hunger and the areas of the brain involved in hunger and eating, I want to talk about what hunger tells us about the brain and its association with behavior. Same material, different focus. 5 #neuroscience #introtoBN

I want to use the intro course to set the majors up for success in the conceptually difficult upper level courses (though student have done great in them so far) and to entice non-majors to think about neuroscience as a major. 4. #neuroscience #introtoBN

in complex environments. The courses provide lots of space for students to think about how brains work and why. Over three classes, I cover the amount of material typically covered in two while taking a more holistic, embodied, and embedded approach than is typical. 3. #IntrotoBN

The course is a 2000 level course for neuroscience majors to take in the spring of their second year and for any student with an interest. I want it to provide foundational knowledge for the upper level courses. The upper level courses are design with a focus on complex behavior... 2 #intro to BN

Suggestions please, #neuroscience! What 5 things do every second year neuroscience major need to know about the brain? An example would be "The brain may be structured hierarchal but that doesn't mean it functions hierarchal." Context and explanation follows in #NRSC2900 thread. 1

I am teaching a course on Pet Behavior in the spring. Anyone have any good articles or resource suggestions on dogs, cats, and other critters? I am planning sections on the psychology of pet ownership, ESAs, dogs on campuses, and the students will pick the pets and behaviors that interest them.
