(and I mean "a few hundred users total", not "a few hundred daily users" -- as an example, we could barely keep a forum with 4-5 dozen daily active users and six hundredish total users under reasonable control with five volunteer moderators working 4-5 hours a day each.

This is also why systems that automatically flag or hide posts based on user reporting density generally don't work -- People will figure out how to weaponize that really quickly.

I suspect it's a corollary of people judging rhetoric differently depending on the target: I suspect most people presume most people are super reasonable all the time, and that all rule violations are obvious.

In my experience, neither is true.

This is another one of those things that I feel people really need experience with to understand in their gut: I've moderated sites with a few HUNDRED users and things get out of hand very quickly without either ridiculously strict policies or ridiculously high moderator to poster ratios.

Of all the potential moderation policies a site needs to have, the violent rhetoric one is consistently the one that causes the most uproar, because people will almost never agree that two posts are equivalent if they are directed at two different targets, even if the words are identical.

Honestly, I think the only real quibble here is that IMHO "milk chocolate", "dark/bittersweet chocolate", and "white chocolate" are sufficiently different in kind that it feels wrong to call them all "chocolate".

...and this is why all my important filenames are POSIX-compliant with underscores (no spaces) and, as much as possible, 8.3 compliant just in case.

Somehow, I'm absurdly reminded of the time our former co-worker R.W. managed to crash the entire global matchmaking server of a random indie multiplayer game by pasting an emoji in as his name, which the frontend accepted as valid unicode but the backend died on.

Frankly, I do boycott Amazon and Wal-Mart myself (the former because I worked there and they don't get my money, the latter for long-ago animus based on the fact my dad owned a tiny grocery store in Appalachia) and while it's harder it's certainly doable as well.

I especially like the ones who think this was a tightly controlled and orchestrated plot ... that involved Fetterman doing what he was told.
November 10, 2025 at 4:14 AM
I think the PARTIAL counterpoint to that is, at least in the case of Fetterman, I don't believe the Democratic caucus has ANY control over the shit he does.

Thing about this always boils down to "you can have THAT life with a mere hundred mil or less" -- getting to "billionaire" practically requires one to be the kind of person who only really understands "get more money" as an activity they enjoy.

I honestly can't say if I think it's "more effort" or "the tools got better".

That said, "Bill from L4D vs. Commander Shepard, to the tune of Bill Nye the Science Guy's theme" is still S tier.

I managed folks in customer service twice in my career. I never had to MANDATE they be nice to customers, because they were well paid and I had their backs with complaints and I didn't say stupid shit like "if you have time to lean you have time to clean".

My cashiers had chairs, too.

Hell, it practically IS that -- compare/contrast Skibidi Toilet with something like G-Mod Idiot Box, they are basically the same thing only with a decade of "hey maybe we shouldn't be QUITE so much of edgelords" in between.

"We need a strong center right party" = "I, as a wealthy self-interested Democrat, need a political opponent who makes me look even slightly left-wing by comparison."

I'm taking away Obamacare because your health insurance companies are evil. I'm raising money with tariffs because the overseas manufacturers are evil and they will totally pay the tariff. I'm cracking down on immigrants because they're the only reason you don't have a good job.

I think it's more to the point, and maybe this is what you meant, that he recognizes (in some cases) who the villains of the average person's story are or are perceived to be and then concocts a narrative where whatever nonsense he wants to do attacks those villains and only those villains.
November 8, 2025 at 4:29 PM
I suspect that's part of the problem: some people are seemingly incapable of dealing with a world in which they are not the main character or some sort of crusading hero.

Me, I just play D&D.
