"No one ever thought this would happen" is dishonest and journalists not pointing that out are doing you all a disservice. Many people said word for word this would happen. You just didn't respect those people. And you need to be honest instead of the feigned surprise for sympathy.

One of the tail-effects of that 90/2000s 'everybody is stupid but me' attitude is that we have this cultural comfort-blanket we can wrap around our views to pretend they're objectively obvious all along and the only reason for disagreement is non-intelligence.

We are paying the price for that now.

Call me conspiratorial, but the pop misogyny aimed at conventionally attractive blonde socialites you were incentivized to hate-watch in the early 2000s was a great smoke screen for how out of touch the upper echelons were and continue to be. "Blame women, not class", was a pretty effective message.
