Recent research from Dr. Tristan Carter:
Homo erectus was able to adapt to and survive in desert-like environments at least 1.2 million years ago, according to a paper in Communications Earth & Environment. The findings suggest that behavioural adaptations included returning repeatedly to specific rivers and ponds for fresh water. 🧪 🏺
Homo erectus adapted to steppe-desert climate extremes one million years ago - Communications Earth & Environment
Homo erectus adapted to hyper-arid climatic conditions one million years ago through the strategic use of rivers and ponds, and this facilitated geographic expansion within and beyond Africa, as shown by multi-proxy data from Oldupai Gorge, Tanzania.

June is Indigenous History Month.
We're spotlighting the work of Indigenous and allied scholars in our department who are rethinking what anthropology can be.
Supporting Indigenous scholarship and confronting the discipline’s colonial roots is work we commit to every day—not just in June. #AnthroSky
