New paper from our lab now in @nature.com . We show that our brains use basis functions or "building blocks" to navigate social interactions. Rather than tracking every individual separately, social information is compressed into patterns that can be flexibly combined. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Basis functions for complex social decisions in dorsomedial frontal cortex - Nature
A study combining group decision-making tasks with fMRI shows that the brain’s dorsomedial prefrontal cortex uses basis functions, similar to those in the visual, motor and spatial domains, to re...

This is a really interesting point, and there are parallels with parenting adolescents too. It's easy to say adolescents need to be able to take risks (they do), but of course there are occasional very bad outcomes from doing so, and probably a more complex list than with children
all in favour of encouraging risky play, etc, but I do wish that pieces encouraging it would admit, nice and high up, that it would mean more children being injured and killed, and that this is a price they consider worthwhile. (I would probably agree!) www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Why kids need to take more risks: science reveals the benefits of wild, free play
Studies reveal how risky play can benefit child development. But encouraging it can be a challenge for parents.

So much of it I could have written myself. Happily married for two decades, yes. But I'm still shaped by a teenage relationship too.

Although it is frequently discussed, AfD support appears only weakly correlated with objective economic conditions. The unemployment rate or the disposable income per capita of a municipality correlate only weakly with the AfD's vote share and its gains compared to 2019.
