To be clear, my question wasn’t: “Why (etymologically) are words gendered?” It was, “Why (logically) are words gendered?” As in, what purpose does that serve? Other than keeping language teachers in business, that is.

Writing for a specific target audience (8th grade level) is considerably harder than consuming the same. Never conflate “An 8th grader could understand this,” with “An 8th grader could write this.”

Can’t say it’s perfect, but I found that reading a YA novel in a foreign language with an e-reader loaded with a translation dictionary was great. Reading helps establish flow, and if you don’t recognize a word translation is a quick long-press away.
