also I discovered spoilers that another common critique of the trailer for this series: "how do the Jedi encounter a Sith in this but think the Sith are extinct in TPM?" is answered in exactly the way I thought it would be and I am both annoyed and grimly happy that I predicted it correctly

like this isn't the first time I've heard this critique, it's a common one, and while I'm not done with the series yet... I haven't encountered a scene where the Jedi preach palingenetic ultranationalism yet, so I'm not sure where the "fascist" angle comes from

at least this guy had dialogue, I guess

People need to stop treating STAR WARS like it’s one giant narrative. It’s not. It’s a setting. It’s a place. We get to visit it through shows, books, movies, games. There can be a consistent tone to a lot of it, and that’s what Lucas helped create, but it can be many things. (2)

Heres Anniliesse, my hapless Jedi Padawan with a mild stutter and a farm girl's knowledge of Jedi, Sith, the Force etc. She's destined for great things.

ChatGPT? Sure, it manages to parse language a bit better, but as an assistant system for basic tasks not handled well by systems like Siri or Google assistant it's only marginally more convenient than a simple search, and one pays for that convenience by a dice roll as to whether it'll be accurate

it's amazing to consider that *all but one* of my AI uses have led to not-quite-good-enough results OR a lone useful result, a fill of a selected area in photoshop which was just the same result as a little skilled application of the clone brush. AI is just so not impressive for the cost

But overall, episode 1 of #TheAcolyte was fine; it's all setup and that's normal. I suppose the sets for the snowy areas in the end scenes were less open then I think they could have been in some spots. The prison break was maybe a little too easy for the prisoners but that's about the extent of it.

This is an aside, but I love the variations of outfits of the Jedi in this time period. White/gold is less humble, but this is a less humble time. If there's one thing I kind of missed, it was seeing the elaborate lightsabers of the High Republic era, but I admit I haven't seen all of the cast's.

The opening sequence with the fight between Mae and Indara is well done and easy to visually parse, so of course people got mad at it; I seem to recall it was that Indara died to a knife in the heart in the moment she was distracted enough to not stop it.

Never mind that Star Wars is famously loose with space physics to the point where additional lore must be made to explain why, say, a space slug inside an asteroid has an atmosphere in its gut sufficient to let humans walk around without protective gear with just a breathing mask on.

But I'm old enough to recall that that scene was incredibly controversial and trumpeted across X (The Everything App™) as proof positive that the showrunners didn't understand Star Wars because fire? In space? Impossible!
May 15, 2025 at 3:20 AM
For example, about halfway through episode 1, Osha is fixing the exterior of a ship. A fire breaks out and she temporarily has a PTSD episode when she looks at the flame before snapping out of it, using the droid fire extinguisher on it.
Incidentally, searching for a screenshot of this was useless.

First one; the amount of criticisms I've seen so far to not pan out at all within this first episode is pretty high. The acting is fine, the characters are fine. From the complaints I'd seen on X (Blaze Your Glory™) when it first came out, I expected constant gaffs and mishandling.
