Some of our organizations have excellent staffs. Others are hampered by suspicion of ‘intellectuals’ and people without a rank-and-file background. Some organiza-tions, such as the International Ladies' Garment Workers Union, devote much time and money to the training of staff people in a wholly-contained union institute. One local union in New York City has engaged the full-time services of a university professor to conduct classes, at which attendance for staff members is com-pulsory, in such subjects as economics, history and literature. In my organization we have had successful institutes at the University of Chicago during which we have attempted to give our staff a broader view of the world's problems. Others rely upon luck and chance, and in most instances, the college-trained applicant for a union staff job is told: ‘Go get a job in the plant and work your way up.’ Not all unions, of course, can afford the quantity or quality of personnel they need. As a matter of fact, very few can. But just as unions have pooled their strength to provide organizers so they can pool their strength to supply imaginative, trained, resourceful staff people to meet tomorrow's problems.”
