New mom. New plays. New England.

Yesterday morning over breakfast, my 2.5 year old told me that she wanted to go to her grandparents house; "they have better books," she said.
Truly the most brutal takedown I've experienced in a long, long time (maybe ever).

that feeling of being ten and sinking your teeth into a Grownup Book full of words you imperfectly understand, staying up too late reading under the covers with your flashlight, is one of the defining joys of nerd childhood. let reading be a little dangerous!

New play submissions are due to the O'Neill on September 18th and to Great Plains Theatre Commons on October 15. So it's time for my annual reminder: many of the folks reading and adjudicating for these kinds of festivals also work at/for other theaters around the country...

Endlessly glad to have moved out of the south and back to New England.

The parade was cancelled due to weather right before it was set to begin. Bernie was already lined up, so he marched anyway. I love Vermont.

All of these women artistic directors are stepping down and many of them are being replaced by men and seasons are starting to reflect it.
June 26, 2025 at 5:38 PM
LOL. They’ve updated their season announcement page to include playwright and director names now. Too bad updating gender disparity is not as easy.
Playwrights Horizons, arguably one of the leading #newplay theaters in the country, just announced a 25/26 season that's nearly devoid of women writers and directors.
I almost missed that fact because I initially closed the page in disgust upon seeing that they failed to credit their playwrights.

Every flashbang could instead be a meal for a poor kid. Every hotel room for a National Guardsman deployed to fire at our neighbors could house a homeless vet. Every "less-than-lethal" bullet pulled from a journalist's eye could be already needed healthcare for anyone else. All of this is a choice.

I always want to know what your theater's next season is. I never want to watch a video to find out.

Back when my guy owned a successful local bakery, he was explicitly told: "Scale or Fail" by a prospective partner. He said "nah" and sold the business. And we're all happier as a result.
Now it’s like, “Sure, you opened a successful local bakery, but how are you going to turn it into a chain of bakeries so instead of baking cakes you can spend all day on Zoom calls with money jerks who don’t eat carbs?”

Fiction. Art. More fiction. A dash of poetry.
the number one challenge for left media in the US isn’t “how do you get americans to listen to left ideas” but “how do you get americans to understand & accept that they’re part of society and responsible for how they treat other human beings” and I have absolutely no idea how to address that

The NEA bloodbath will impact us all, whether we get funds or not, whether we are artists or audience members or simply citizens. I used to look at the low level of federal funding as an American curse. But it also means that, for better or worse, we know how to find a way. We will not be silenced.
