Graduate student Brigette Manohar, who is from Trinidad and Tobago, described for the representatives her fear that reduced NIH funding will derail her career. She currently is developing ways to get CRISPR therapies into into the brain to treat neurological diseases. Kathy Yelick, UC Berkeley’s vice chancellor for research and professor of electrical engineering and computer sciences, explains how the current federal freeze on research funds is already impacting campus planning. Jennifer Doudna, who shared the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the invention of CRISPR gene editing, discusses the biomedical research underway in the Innovative Genomics Institute with Los Angeles Rep. Ted Lieu during his visit to the campus on Feb. 21.
