Norway kept out of the EEC, if only to make Sweden and Finland look like a cock and balls on the old 2€ coin. But they've been in the ESC since 1960 making some very fine noises and four "nul points" (a record shared with Austria). None of today's runners got "nul points" but two did come last.

Kirsti Sparboe in 1969, coming last by going "Oj, oj, oj, så glad jeg skal bli". It's like a cross between a Carry On theme and something from "The Bathrooms Are Coming"... The verse and the chorus don't seem especially related, but thankfully there's a ridiculously drumtastic samba bridge to another little bridge that's basically "Puppet on a String" but we're not there for long cos then we're back going "Oj oj oj" for the rest of the song (with key-changes and skronk to keep us entertained), and who, frankly, could want more than that? Kirsti is dressed in national colours: a long-sleeved dress in blue velvet with large white naval collar and cuffs with fringed detail revealing an extending red layer below. The look is finished off with a white bow that has more ends than makes mathematical sense to the point that you wonder if AI made it. Her ginger hair is piled up in an elaborate bread-loaf behind her head. And it being 1969, Dali's sculpture is there behind her too. It's now so close I think it might actually make an attack. Run, Kirsti! RUN!

Grethe Kausland and Benny Borg in 1972, successfully recapturing the folksy sleigh-bell sound of the early Scandinavian entries and distilling it into the beautiful "Småting". The pair look indistinguishable from Jenny Agutter (as Hedda Gabler, with coiffed hair and in a Laura Ashley dress made from a pair of blue and green satin curtains, plus collar necklace) and a hirsuit guitar-playing Jim Broadbent (as Johnny Cash in black suit with navy neckerchief thing under a white shirt collar). It probably helps that "Småting" sounds like it might be a bit rude, but there can be no denying that this sweet little snowball will stay with you wherever you go and that you won't really mind that it does. Bring on the snow. The Christmas ads are on telly, after all...

Bobbysocks! One of the most profoundly '80s performances of 1985, "La det swinge" is an energetic, swinging retro affair, and has proven itself to be rather more memorable than pretty much everything else from the period, including everything that copied it. One might accurately describe it as "King of the Fjord". Belle and the Devotions were booed so that this might rise and take the win. Bobbysocks! are two women: the one on the left is in a '50s style black bustier dress with broad long skirt of black and white vertical panels. Over she wears a short long-sleeved jacket in purple sequins with a hint of shoulderpads. She's also in black see-through gloves. Her brown hair is sprayed firmly into the 1980s. The one on the right has black trousers and a black top cut as low as her colleague's, over which is a longer jacket in the same purple sequins, sans-shoulders. Her light brown hair is less styled but still mildly mulletty.

Ketil Stokkan embracing the new Europe of 1990 with "Brandenburger Tor" (which rhymes with L.A. Law). Ketil's a cross between Michael Schumacher and John Lithgow. He's in a silky oversized black jacket and white shirt fastened at the collar with a silver brooch. The jacket also has a brooch, and there's the hint of more decoration at the cuff. His short black hair is slickly set. He holds the mic like he's Bryan Ferry. Nothing about this song should be any good at all, and yet it has an amazingly endearing chorus that is difficult to put down. A quiet rendition near the end is followed by a build up that should in an ideal world go on building for another hour or so. If you want to wave your lighter, there are few more appropriate locations than here. New Europe disagreed and it came joint-last.
