🚨Last week Helyeh Doutaghi, a scholar in international law, was barred from Yale and put on administrative leave: ‘The decision came three days after a news site powered by artificial intelligence, published a story calling her a member of a terrorist group.’

Our two papers on abortion bans and fertility/infant mortality are now out.

In 14 states w/ abortion bans, fertility increased 1.7% and infant mortality increased 6%.

Key takeaway is that these impacts were disproportionately felt among those w/ greatest structural disadvantages.

🧵 US states that implemented abortion bans saw higher than expected infant mortality rates, with larger increases among Black infants and those in southern states, according to this analysis of US national vital statistics data from 2012–2023.

This is an extraordinarily important program for training young scientists. The smart design is to create an incentive for top scientists, those w their own major grants, to mentor people from backgrounds that are underrepresented in science (in many diff ways)--which doesn't always happen naturally
And the funding announcement for diversity supplements now has been updated to expire today. Supplements are so important to the careers of junior scientists. This is crushing for post docs and early career faculty

LA is vast. It is a city and a county. It is a global place, a Pacific Rim space, a “Third World” metropolis. It has all the contradictions of the world and all the world is condensed in it. The homes of rich, poor, middle class, Black, white, Asian, Latino have burned. Fire is coming for all of us.

Not only is this wildly irresponsible, what does it mean for a “conflict” to “spill into the United States” if the US itself is unconditionally funding it?
NYT frames article on the New Orleans attack in context of concerns about the Gaza war inspiring terrorism then provides zero evidence that's what happened here
