Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

Thinking about this tonight, from 20 years ago: "Senator McConnell spoke on the Senate floor on the 50th anniversary of the polio vaccine and his childhood experience with polio."

🚨 Everyone needs to call their Dem Senator right now. They are starting to cave.

Tell them:
1. Vote NO on Cloture
AND
2. Vote NO on the Republican spending bill.

Don’t let them pivot to reconciliation. GOP doesn’t need Dem votes on that and they know it.

TODAY is the showdown.

NEWS: The USAID official put on leave for disseminating two memos about Rubio's failure to push through life-saving foreign aid was in the process of writing a THIRD memo when fired. We obtained it. It's far more alarming than the first two.

The Trump administration is:
*breaking the law by not spending appropriated money from Congress
*breaking the law by ignoring a court order
*lying about it
*killing people
*silencing public employees who are pointing all of this out

This should not be posed by journalists as cost-cutting measure. This is an attempt to gut civil rights enforcement across the federal government and therefore across American life. www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2025/...

Legal experts said that unwinding a civil rights-era bulwark designed to safeguard employees’ rights removes a crucial check on institutional power.

Rubio terminated 5800 USAID contracts – more than 90% of its foreign aid programs – in defiance of the courts.

Here’s a list of just some of the lifesaving awards that were terminated. Nearly all were Congressionally mandated. They’ve saved millions of lives. 🧵

Just spitballing, but things that could happen today:
*Court injunction protecting USAID
*Dems demand hearings on Musk's role
*Someone introduce articles of impeachment
*Dem officeholders go to USAID offices with USAID workers
*Refuse to conduct any more Senate confirmations until this is resolved

The Tea Party mobilized over far less than Trump has executed in the last two weeks and was able to shift national media coverage to a focus on debt for months.
Drawing on research, goals of protest would be to get media to talk more about how unpopular Trump’s policies are and, through coverage, draw attention to most egregious stuff, move public opinion, splinter some factions of his coalition and, even, shift policy. www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

1. Trump and his budget chief that they believe they do not have to spend money Congress appropriates.
2. Promise a massive screening of appropriated spending to new, political criteria that do not exist in law.
3. Capture machinery for controlling flow of money.

Pretty clear where this is going.
I spoke to former Treasury and OMB officials, and they said Elon Musk accessing government payment systems could give him the power to selectively turn off payments. They described what this really means in very clarifying terms. See below:

An unelected, erratic, ketamine-addled billionaire with far right/white nationalist views has taken control of the personnel and payment systems of the United States government. Not an exaggeration, not hyperbole.
