NHTSA closed their year+ investigation of Waymo. Waymo's 2 recalls re to this investigation were for crashing into a utility pole and roadway barriers. Evidently, robots repeatedly driving on the wrong side of the road into traffic and disobeying traffic control devices is ok in USA. Scale that.
Another Waymo robot failed amid an active police action. PD told Waymo telops to make their robot turn right, but the robot+telops still doesn't, ie Waymo's "system" disobeyed PD:

Pico Blvd at Grand Ave, LA

This is why PD often just drive Waymo robots out of the way.

Zoox expanded their geo for free rides to a little more than 2 sq miles, ie ~5% of the land area of San Francisco.

All the nearby surface streets have speed limits within Zoox 25 mph DMV permit cap.

Today, I saw one Zoox SUV w safety driver near the Embarcadero in SoMa for the first time in years.

Another failed Waymo robot awkwardly blocking traffic:

Rural & Warner, Tempe, AZ

AFAIK, this satisfies AZ AV regulations minimum requirement for a failed robot's Minimal Risk Condition, ie stopped wherever endangering others.

Waymo doesn't have to report this failure to anyone.

Zoox video announcing their free ridehail service in San Francisco shows a ride being booked ~1.5 miles outside of Zoox service area. GM Cruise used to post similar aspirational ads.

Zoox has had as many recalls this year as Waymo's had ever.

Zoox CA driverless permit limits them to 25 mph in SF.

100 block of Townsend St, San Francisco

Same block as Andreessen Horowitz SF office and Cloudflare HQ, and a block from Giants baseball park and the old and now very quiet GM Cruise HQ.

Something this AM, prob by Embarcadero, backed up traffic in this area and Waymo robots were in the thick of it.

Lyft and Uber drove a fair share of the worst of the 2010s AV hype, exploiting it to boost their IPOs.

Lyft's 2019 IPO prospectus mentioned "autonomous" 109 times. It was the best rationale they had for how they'd be profitable.

This article fails to mention "Zoox Explorers" can Zoox explore only within a ~1 sq mile area of San Francisco ~centered around the Zoox depot across the street from the old GM Cruise depot & Costco.

"Zoox has deployed a fleet of 50 robotaxis between San Francisco and Las Vegas" and Foster City?

Tesla "robotaxi" so safe even the safety driver can fall asleep. Maybe not.

View of Waymo robots being human maintained (charging & disk swap) in the small street level lot of their original and possibly still main LA depot.

Notice a few Zeekr (6th gen) robots are mixed w mostly Jaguar (5th gen) robots.

Waymo robots spend ~half of their time at depots.

Tesla "robotaxi" is indefensible, though their crash record is BETTER THAN WAYMO OR CRUISE had for initial service in SF.

Waymo had 9 crashes in first ~46k miles of commercial ridehail service.

GM Cruise had a multi-person injury crash first day of commercial ops, resulting in their first recall.
“.. Tesla’s current Robotaxi crash rate .. is about 2x higher than Waymo’s, despite in-car supervisors that prevent an unknown number of crashes.”

Waymo bug or cunning plan to lower their crash per mile stats?

Waymo hit another "apparent" cat, reportedly at 26 mph ~midnight in Austin. Waymo's attached NHTSA crash report narrative doesn't mention if their robot stopped immediately after the crash as required else another Waymo automated hit and run.

Waymo's KitKat crash report should be public next month.

I thought Waymo robots always used the windshield wipers during rain. Perhaps a ~random bug.

Not using them in heavy rain needlessly and significantly reduces passenger situational awareness, so if a problem occurs they'll be less able to help or cope.
