The top and corner dark little cylinders are the lidar sensors. It can't move without all of them working.

Artificial Impatience as a service.

Too patient was long a main Waymo complaint/anecdote, which reversed as they've purposely increased aggressiveness, triggering a NHTSA investigation of Waymo around school buses/children.

Lifesafety narrows Goldilocks solution windows as AI obscurrs their edges.

Waymo robot “was not recognizing that it needed to obey the state law of stopping whenever the (busses') red lights were on,” AISD Police Assistant Chief Travis Pickford

Looks like Serve didn't give their Chicago sidewalk robots snow tires.

Serve is a spinoff of Uber's acquisition of Postmates. Last quarter their revenue covered 3% of expenses.

This was posted on x by @davidshepardson.bsky.social who doesn't post here.

Austin ISD has its own police dept w ~150 staff.

We may have to wait for Waymo's official NHTSA recall notice next week to find out if their sw recall for this defect is a 3rd attempt to fix this or the already failed fix.

Another Waymo passenger stuck in a failed robot in the middle of the street, SF Bay area, though prob not SF.

On ave in California, ~2 Waymo robots are stuck w passenger(s) unable to move without human assistance (telops, field rescue driver, police takeover, tow), per CPUC.

Here's the footage of a Waymo robot killing KitKat despite a woman attempting to save the cat and the woman's description of events.

Waymo describe this as the cat darting under their robot. Waymo's redacted NHTSA crash report should be publicly available in ~10 days.

"Footage obtained by The New York Times of the moment a Waymo car ran over Kit Kat, a beloved San Francisco bodega cat, raises new questions about the company’s safeguards."

Waymo's robots lack situational awareness to an alarming and prob unacceptable extent.

Another Waymo robot w passenger drove into floodwater. OP said the robot drove through it ok. Many ways it could've had a bad outcome.

Jaguar I-Pace has a wading depth of almost 20 inches.

Waymo, not a ride, an adventure.

Rather uninformed analysis. Waymo's had many more animal crashes than he mentioned. Attached graph doesn't inc their two most recent that were at night like the vast majority have been, eg KitKat was killed at ~11:30 PM. That implies their lidar & radar were ~ineffective.

4 days earlier, Austin sent Waymo a letter demanding

“Waymo immediately cease operation of its automated vehicles during the hours of 5:20 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., until more in-depth software updates are completed and Waymo can guarantee its vehicles will comply with the law.”

NHTSA sent Waymo a letter regarding their Austin school bus problem, strongly hinting this should be a recall which makes sense as there is no doubt it is a safety defect, ie an unreasonable risk.

I don't think ppl appreciate what a thin margin Waymo has.

NHTSA added the 19 Waymo incidents w Austin school buses to their investigation of the first report of this in Atlanta.

IMO, NHTSA should expand this investigation to inc similar Waymo misbehavior/incidents w police & fire vehicles and prob transit as well. All similar defect/fault pattern, AFAICT.

Irony, foreshadowing, or both; a Waymo robot w passenger(s) in the heart of Silicon Valley struggling to pivot, blocking the way:

The nearly 100 year old Varsity Theatre (now a Blue Bottle) can be seen in the background.

*8 companies have been granted Deployment permits, inc Mercedes for their highly restricted L3 on fwy only at speeds up to 40 mph system, which is the only ADS avail for purchase in California.

"these Waymo driverless cars can’t recognize a roadblock for a SWAT scene here in Beverly Hills. Car drove past the closure right up to where police were before backing up and turning around"
OP: x.johnschreiber, KCAL News, 2/1/2024

Waymo has repeatedly violated police cordons & disobeyed police.
December 3, 2025 at 5:02 PM
They are most likely doing it for money, ie to please investors by increasing their paid rides per robot hour.
December 3, 2025 at 2:42 PM
Waymo reported an apparent phantom braking leading directly to being rear ended. Waymo and other mfg are supposed to report why their robots/ADS stop. When they don't it is presumed to be for no good reason, ie phantom braking, for which there have been NHTSA investigations and ADS recalls.

Whole industries depend on getting algorithms to behave greedily but not too greedily, eg finance and insurance.

Very odd that ppl think AI can be as like humans as possible while also not being as like humans as possible.

I'm not a big fan of anthropomorphizing tech, but if the metaphor fits.
December 2, 2025 at 6:48 PM
AFAIK, the only description is Waymo's narrative from their redacted NHTSA crash report (below). There's never been a published interview of the cyclist, passengers, or any other witnesses, AFAICT.

Waymo robots often drive away from crashes as soon as the way is clear. They also often disobey PD.

"I can't move at the moment, but help is on the way"
Waymo robot in the LA area

Prob meaning a field rescue team is on the way to takeover and drive the car back to a depot, AKA a Vehicle Recovery Event.

Waymo refuses to allow the public to know how often this happens.

Robots/ADS are held to lower standards than human drivers in the US. Waymo robots haven't even be cited for the many moving violations they've done right in front of police in California due to a special robots only loophole in a law written to suit Google and signed by the governor at their HQ.

Oh, I didn't know about the flying drones. Most places it has been tried have detached homes w yards for the drones to drop objects.

Looks like they are only permitted to fly over the parking lot and for lab tests not for deliveries, according to this from SF Planning's Letter of Determination.
December 2, 2025 at 3:29 AM
The Waymo passenger/OP posted an update on reddit stating Waymo confirmed/admitted hitting the dog (pic1) and a copy of their trip receipt (pic2) showing dropoff at their home, which together appear to confirm or at least strongly suggest the robot did not stop after hitting the dog.

A police officer assisted a (prob novice) Waymo passenger w the Waymo UI to contact telops when her Waymo robot stopped and/or got stuck behind an ongoing arrest.

Sounds like the officer wanted the robot to go around, but knew enough about Waymo to tap it/UI over to telops.
