Post a picture you've taken of a cow. If you've no cows in your gallery, that's your 2026 challenge.

Since everything is awful and it’s nearly Christmas, who’d like some pictures of ship’s cats? Don’t worry dog lovers, a canine thread’s coming soon! Let’s start with Tiddles, sitting in his favourite spot on the carrier HMS Victorious in 1943 (he liked playing with the bell rope)

Charles Ignatius Sancho: London’s Most Extraordinary 18th-Century Gentleman
In a century wracked by empire, powdered wigs, and the polite hypocrisies of Georgian England, Charles Ignatius Sancho did something utterly shocking: he lived. Not merely survived—lived. Fully, richly, inconveniently. He composed minuets. He traded tobacco. He sparred with politicians. He wrote letters with such verve and insight that they were published to wide acclaim. And—most incredibly of all for the time—he was a Black man in London who dared to have opinions.

'The Aquarium in the Flooded Mall' by Jude Mason
STRANGE AND TENTACLE-Y Some of the cuttlefish put their tentacles on your face and it feels like they’re tasting your thoughts maybe. Plus, the old shops still have mannequins and they look like people coming out of the dark towards you. THESE CUTTLEFISH HAVE THINGS TO SAY The cuttlefish pulse all over with beautiful colours, great waves of colour spreading across their bodies and they put thoughts in your mind somehow. I can’t remember exactly what they told me, but it was definitely important. I BROUGHT MY GIRLFRIEND HERE TO PROPOSE AND SHE LEFT ME THE NEXT DAY I had it written on one of those underwater whiteboards and I thought it would be so romantic. Then the cuttlefish came and did this weird dance around us, and when we got out she said she was sorry but she couldn’t ignore what they told her. She blocked me everywhere and I don’t know where she is. WHAT THE HELL DID THEY SAY TO HER AND HOW DID THEY EVEN SAY IT WHY CUTTLEFISH THO There are other marine animals that are way cooler IMO. 2/5 because the parking was decent and the restaurant was pretty nice. MY SON IS DIFFERENT NOW The cuttlefish swam round him in spirals, like a dance or something, and I’ve never seen him so happy. When we took him out he said his first and only word: ‘Home’. He now spends all his time drawing cuttlefish and showing them to us. I wish I knew what he was saying. RECOMMENDATION: IMPLEMENT ‘ROWAN TREE’ PROTOCOL - Close Aquarium to the public - Capture resident cuttlefish; redeploy to military-grade installation - Scrape social channels for anomalous experiences - Make urgent contact with all affected - Detain all Aquarium employees for interrogation      --- Jude Mason is a social-media Luddite with a love of science fiction, a fascination for fairy-tales and the conviction that cats make everything better.

FlashFlood: Debut Flash: 'Trevor wants to know…' by Tanner Gore #nffd2025
Debut Flash: 'Trevor wants to know…' by Tanner Gore
Trevor points to a painting hanging on the wall of the bar we’re in, asks me if it’s an Austrian emperor, or something. “That’s Tom Selleck.” “Are you sure?” I am sure. I have no idea why he’s dressed like Napoleon—but I certainly know Tom Selleck when I see him. For the next five minutes, I’m subjected to Trevor’s incorrigible curiosity. Maybe Tom Selleck has Austrian ancestors, or visited Innsbruck, maybe even this bar, or maybe the owner just likes him, or maybe he’s in some movie that’s really popular here, or maybe it’s an inside joke, or maybe… “For Christ’s sake, Trevor, just ask the bartender.” “Can you ask?” “No, you can ask.” “I don’t speak German.” “They speak English here too.” Trevor purses his lips, then opens them again. Now he asks how Gertrude could have known the exact details of Ophelia’s death in Hamlet if she wasn’t there, and why you can’t eat grapefruit on certain heart medications. He asks me how to properly pronounce Geschwindigkeitsüberschreitung, and to explain what a planet being in retrograde means again. He wonders if the Second World War could have been avoided with a less punitive Treaty of Versailles, or if Martian colonization will ever pan out. Before I can get a word in, he asks me whether I believe free will exists. “Apparently not,” I say as I scoot out my chair and head over to the bartender. When I return, I throw a menu at Trevor. Hammer my finger on the header. “Café Moustache! The bar’s called Café Moustache. Tom Selleck famously has a moustache. They saw the painting online and thought it would fit the theme.” “Hm,” Trevor says, his eyes gleaming with the depth of an ocean. “Wonder why they chose that name…”   --- Tanner Gore is an emerging writer living in Innsbruck, Austria. When not writing, he enjoys cooking goulash, dancing in techno clubs, and pacing aimlessly around his apartment.
